Two Pages sells one roller shade it describes as waterproof, built for humid rooms, resistant to mould and mildew. Its material line reads 100% Polyester. The light filtering shade beside it in the same Alvin collection, the one that makes no moisture claim at all, was verified on 2026-08-22 as 70% PVC. The plastic one is not the waterproof one.
The same merchant sells a curtain for bathroom windows, with a removable waterproof layer hooked behind the fabric. On that product page, in its own words, sits this sentence: the waterproof layer “cannot prevent mildew on non-waterproof outer fabrics.” The listing that sells you a bathroom curtain tells you the visible half of it can still go mouldy.
Neither of those is a scandal. Both are what happens when a word is used for merchandising and never defined as a specification. Every bathroom window treatments shelf on these three sites works the same way, and none of them will tell you what you actually need to know.
The reveal rules half of these out before the fabric does
Start with the tape measure, because it decides faster than any material argument. Every room asks a window something slightly different, and what each room actually asks of a window treatment is a question this one answers in inches before it answers in fabric.
Three of these six listings publish a minimum depth for an inside mount, which is a number worth taking before you choose anything else, and they are not close together. Two Pages asks for more than 4 inches on the waterproof Alvin. Neutral Curtains asks 3 5/8 inches on the Tavi roller, although an FAQ block further down the same page answers “2 inches” while talking about roman shades, which is a template answer, not a second specification. On the Willow bamboo shade, Neutral publishes 2 1/2 inches, and only for the motorised version. There is no figure for the manual one.

Measure the reveal before choosing a fabric. A shallow frame rules options out faster than a budget does.

A bathroom window is usually the smallest in the house and the shallowest, often tiled right up to the frame. Four inches of reveal is not a formality in that setting. It quietly removes, from an inside mount, the one product in this group that its own maker describes as built for the room. The two Half Price Drapes products sidestep the question entirely by not having a mechanism: the sheer hangs on a rod, and the tie-up shade is a 4 inch pole pocket that slides onto a pole of 1 1/2 inches diameter maximum, in one ready-made size of 46 by 63 inches.
Then there is what a raised shade keeps. Neutral publishes a 7 inch minimum stack height on the Willow. On a bathroom window 24 inches tall, seven inches of stacked bamboo sits across the top third of the glass all day, every day, whether the shade is down or up. You would be paying for a shade in order to lose the light you were trying to keep.

A different arrangement
Mount it high and outside the wet line
In a bathroom, take the treatment outside the reveal and fix it above the frame rather than inside it, so the bottom rail stops clear of the sill and nothing sits where water collects.
A sill in a bathroom is a shelf that holds condensation, and the bottom edge of an inside-mounted shade sits right in it. Moving the whole assembly outside and above lifts the fabric out of the puddle, buys back the reveal depth that shallow tiled frames rarely have, and closes the side gaps in the bargain. The cost is a few inches of wall, which a small window can usually spare.
A way of laying out what is already in the room, not a shopping list. Nothing new has to be ordered for it.
The same three eighths of an inch, two opposite instructions
Three listings publish the same width deduction, 3/8 of an inch, and they do not mean the same thing by it. It is the step where a roller shade is actually sized, and the step where a bathroom window has the least room to spare.
Two Pages, on the waterproof Alvin: “Order finished width after reduction 3/8 inch.” The buyer subtracts. Neutral Curtains, on both the Tavi and the Willow: “We automatically make a 3/8 inch deduction from your measured width.” The factory subtracts, and on the bamboo shade a note on the order will cancel it. Two sentences that look identical at a glance, pointing in opposite directions.

Subtract it yourself on a listing where the factory also subtracts it and you lose three quarters of an inch. On a 24 inch bathroom window that is 3 percent of the width, showing up as a gap of roughly three eighths of an inch down each side. In a living room that gap is a light problem you notice at midday. Here it is a privacy problem, at eye height, visible from whatever window faces yours, and it is permanent because the shade was made to that size.
Manufacturing tolerance stacks on top of it, in the same direction: Neutral publishes 3/8 inch of variance on the finished Tavi and 0.4 inch on the handmade Willow. Outside mounts go the other way, with both merchants asking for 2 to 4 inches more than the frame, which is the same correction a curtain gets for free from a rod that overshoots.
A step that pays off
On tile, aim for the grout line
Set the bracket height so the screws land in a grout joint rather than in the middle of a tile, and start the hole with tape over the spot and the drill on its slowest speed, hammer action off.
Grout is softer than the glaze and it is the one part of a tiled wall that can be made good afterwards. A bit that wanders across a glazed face chips it, and a chipped tile is a tile replaced. Hanging a treatment above a tiled reveal is usually a two-inch decision: move the bracket line up or down to meet the joint before you accept a hole in the tile.
Method, not merchandise. No part of this changes with where you bought the curtain.
What “waterproof” covers, and what the same brand says it does not
Now the material, in the order the window allows.
The waterproof Alvin is 100% polyester at 293 gsm, and Two Pages claims 100% blackout for it, along with resistance to water, oil, mould, mildew and staining, for humid rooms like bathrooms and kitchens. The Tavi from Neutral Curtains is also 100% polyester, with a floor price of $42.99 against $41.99, and it makes no moisture claim of any kind. Two roller shades, the same composition line, a dollar apart, and one of them carries the word.

So whatever separates them is not a fibre. It is a surface treatment and a sentence on a page, neither of which is measured against any published standard. No test, no rating, no number: on all six listings, the word “waterproof” is a claim and nothing more. That is worth knowing before it becomes the reason you spend more.
The curtain works differently again, and more honestly. The waterproof part is a separate PEVA layer, 85 gsm, PVC free, hooked behind a fabric panel taken from the merchant’s ordinary collections, and it stops at a maximum width of 84 inches. Geometry follows: the protected layer is behind, so the surface facing the room, the one steam reaches first, is untreated cloth. Past 84 inches of width there is no protected layer at all. This is exactly what the brand’s own note says, and it deserves credit for saying it.
Here the obvious objection deserves an answer, because it is a good one. A bathroom window is rarely splashed. What it gets is condensation, night after night, on the coldest surface in the room. Not one of these six listings distinguishes the two, and neither does the vocabulary they sell with.

“Bathroom” is a shelf in the catalogue, not a line in the spec
Search any of these three sites for the room and you land in a different kind of aisle each time.
At Two Pages, the bathroom results are shower curtains first. The one window product built for the room is that waterproof roller shade, and the Custom Luxury Bathroom Curtains listing, which sells itself in its own text as bathroom curtains for windows, is filed by the merchant under the product type Shower Curtain. Its ten fabric choices run from $49.99 to $119.99 and share a single SKU, so what you are picking is a cloth, not a product.
Those six figures, incidentally, cannot be lined up against each other. Four are configurator floors that do not yet include a size, one is the lowest of four ready-made lengths, and one is a single fixed size. There is no cheapest here, only six different things a price can mean.
Neutral Curtains publishes a collection called Bamboo Shade for Bathroom. Every product in it is a woven bamboo shade, and the composition line on those shades reads 20% bamboo and 80% paper. Half Price Drapes publishes Curtains for Bathrooms, which holds shower curtains and sheer window curtains and nothing else, plus an advice page that names its two criteria outright: “Calming design and complete privacy are the two crucial aspects of choosing your bathroom curtain & drapes.” Moisture is not one of them.

Three shelves, three organising logics: by use, by material, by privacy. For anyone shopping by room, the consequence is direct. Two products found through the same word can share no property at all, so the word cannot be used to compare them, and getting back to something comparable means going down to the composition line yourself. No shop does that for you.
None of which makes the shelves dishonest. Grouping small formats and privacy fabrics is a defensible answer to a small window. It is simply a different answer from the one most people think they are buying when they click a link that says bathroom.

Privacy here is a night-time number, and nobody publishes one
Every opacity figure in this group belongs to the brand that printed it, and it is worth knowing what these opacity words are worth before reading them. All four describe the same situation.
Two Pages claims 100% blackout on the waterproof Alvin. Neutral claims 50% shading on the Willow. Half Price Drapes claims 20% sheer opacity on its double layered voile, an unlined panel with no backing in a single 100 inch width, and 60 to 65% of incoming light blocked on the cotton tie-up shade. The Tavi is sold as blackout or light filtering without a percentage, with the caveat that the full version depends on choosing the front valance: the back valance lets light in at the sides, the headrail being around 2 inches deep.

All of those numbers describe a room darker than the outdoors. A bathroom is used the other way round. After dark, with the light on, the inside is the bright side, and cloth that gave complete privacy at three in the afternoon gives away a silhouette at ten at night. It is also why covering the bottom half only solves more of a bathroom window than it looks like it should: the half that is overlooked is the lower one. None of these six listings publishes a figure for that, and in this room it is the only figure that counts.

A fabric judged for daytime privacy has to be judged again with the room lit and the sky dark, because the bright side is the side that shows.
Daylight privacy works because outside is brighter than inside: the fabric reads as a surface. A bathroom is the one room where that second reading is the only one that matters, and it is the reading no shading percentage describes.

The care line is the one nobody reads, and in this room it decides
Read the last paragraph of each listing, the one below the specifications, and a different ranking appears. The care label follows the construction, not the fibre, and in a wet room that distinction stops being academic.
The Millstone tie-up shade has no lift mechanism. A 4 inch pole pocket goes over a rod and two 70 inch fabric ties gather it by hand, which the merchant describes plainly as a stationary product. It is 100% cotton with a lining, in one size, and no fabric weight is published for it. A shade tied by hand does not come down to be washed: it stays up, and the first mark it takes is the mark it keeps.
It is also the clearest illustration of a habit worth recognising. This shade was $10.50 on 2026-08-22 and $12.25 on 2026-09-12, up almost 17 percent in three weeks, while the $34.99 struck through beside it did not move by a cent. A number that never changes is not a former price, and the percentage printed next to it is not a discount.

The Willow arrives with its hardware, and the screws supplied are for drywall or a stud. On a tiled reveal those are not the right fixings, and nothing on the page says so. The PEVA layer on the Two Pages curtain goes the other way: removable, wipeable, which is the only cleaning instruction in the whole group that a wet room can actually accommodate.
