Twelve listings from three merchants were read on their own product pages on 22 August 2026, with a single question in mind: which windows does this listing say it will cover? Seven of them answer. Five say nothing at all.
That ratio is the subject. A window is not difficult because it is unusual. It is difficult because its numbers fall outside the range a listing publishes, and where no range is published, nothing on the page can say whether your window is inside it.
The same shade, two mechanisms, two different windows
Two Pages sells the Patti roman shade in 100% Belgian linen at 248 gsm. Its page publishes two size ranges rather than one.
Manual: 18 to 84 inches wide, 24 to 72 inches long. Motorised: 27 to 96 inches wide, 18 to 98 inches long.
Those ranges do not overlap the way you would expect. A window 20 inches wide sits inside the manual range and outside the motorised one. A window 80 inches tall sits inside the motorised range and outside the manual one. Same fabric, same page, same shade, and the lift decides whether the window is eligible at all.
The listing gives the mechanical reason without drawing the conclusion. The manual headrail measures 3/4 inch high by 1 1/2 inches deep; the motorised one measures 2 3/4 inches by 3 1/2 inches. A bigger box needs more room, and the shade asks for 2 3/8 inches of inside-mount depth either way.
On an ordinary window none of this matters, because an ordinary window sits comfortably inside both ranges. On a narrow one, or a very tall one, the motor is not an upgrade added at the end. It belongs to the size question, and it gets decided first. The bill that follows is a separate subject: what motorising changes, and what it costs.
What makes a window hard here is a number, not an adjective
Nobody regulates the phrase, so here is the working definition used on this page. A window is difficult when it is too narrow, too wide, too short or too tall for the range a listing publishes; when the reveal is too shallow for the headrail; when the opening is not square; or when it is not yours to drill into.
Every one of those is checkable before you shop, with a tape measure and a listing.
Two neighbouring subjects are deliberately left alone here. A patio door or a wide glass opening you also have to walk through carries its own constraints (where the panels stack, what has to keep moving) and they are treated where they belong, on an opening you also have to walk through. So does the gap between the number you write down and the number that gets made: what the merchant deducts from the size you give, who deducts it, and how far the finished piece may land from it.
What is left is the question those pages do not answer. Which windows will the catalogue take at all?
Seven listings out of twelve say which windows they will make
Seven do, and they are worth reading as published.
Two Pages prints Width Range 12-240 inches and Length (Height) Range 20-300 inches on its made-to-measure curtain for sliding glass doors. Its Patti roman shade prints the two ranges above. Its motorised Alvin roller shade prints 22 to 98 inches wide, 20 to 118 inches long.
Neutral Curtains prints 21 to 80 inches wide, 20 to 119 inches long, in eighths of an inch on the Tavi roller shade, and 22 to 98 inches wide, 14 to 119 inches long on its motorised roman shade.
Half Price Drapes does something else, twice. Its Millstone tie-up shade comes in one ready-made size, 46 inches wide by 63 inches long. Its extra-wide hotel blackout curtain comes in a single 100-inch width, offered in four lengths (84, 96, 108 and 120 inches) with no width to choose at all.
That last distinction carries further than it looks. Five of the seven publish a range, which is an offer to make something between two numbers. Two publish a size, which is an offer to sell the thing already made. A stock size does not stretch towards a window; the window has to arrive fitting it.
The remaining five (a shutter, a cellular shade, two bamboo shades and a roman shade) publish no size range whatsoever. They invite a width and a height into a configurator or a price calculator.

On a narrow window, it is the floor that decides
Size talk is usually about the ceiling. On a small window, the floor is what eliminates.
The lowest published minimum width here is 12 inches, and it appears on the page Two Pages titles Custom Curtains for Sliding Glass Doors, which is to say on the product sold for the widest opening in its catalogue. The rest run 18 inches for the Patti in manual, 21 inches for the Tavi, 22 inches for both the motorised Alvin roller and Neutral’s motorised roman shade, and 27 inches for the Patti once it is motorised.
Heights have floors too, and the lowest is 14 inches, on Neutral’s motorised roman shade. A short window above a counter is inside that range and outside most of the others.

Then comes a cost that no price displays. A roman shade stacks when it is raised. Neutral publishes approximately 7 to 10 inches of stack height on its motorised roman shade and a minimum of 7 inches on its bamboo shades, adding in both cases that the figure moves with style, size and fabric. On a window 30 inches tall, seven inches of permanently occupied glass is a proportion, not a detail.
One more caution belongs here, printed by Two Pages itself: because of the deco fold design, the Patti may extend beyond the window frame when installed as an inside mount. Where there is no spare wall on either side, that changes the answer, and how a roller behaves in a narrow reveal is the comparison worth making next.

The tall window is the one this catalogue answers best, up to a seam
Height is where these listings are most generous. Two Pages will make a curtain up to 300 inches long. Neutral’s Tavi roller and its motorised roman shade both reach 119 inches. The motorised Alvin roller reaches 118 inches.
The same Two Pages page then prints a second number that quietly bounds the first: Fabric Width: 112 inches. The order width runs to 240 inches; the cloth is 112 inches wide. Past that finished width the panel is necessarily seamed, and the page says neither where a seam falls nor how many there are. It is not concealed; joining the two figures is simply left to the buyer.
Two silences sit on the same listing. There is no maximum panel weight published, on a product orderable at 240 by 300 inches. And the page states that lengths vary by 1 inch due to handcraft, which is a published tolerance rather than a fault, but which reads differently against a 300-inch drop than against a 63-inch one. What that order is actually made of, line by line, is how a made-to-measure total is built.

Two inches of reveal, and the list gets short
Depth removes products faster than budget does, and this set publishes seven values.
1 3/4 inches for the Two Pages Veritas hardwood shutter. 2 inches for the Aura Day Night cellular shade, and 2 1/4 inches for a flush fit, a separate figure on the same line. 2 3/8 inches for the Patti roman shade. 2 1/2 inches recommended by Neutral for its motorised roman shade. 2 3/4 inches for the Half Price Drapes roman shade. 3 5/8 inches in the specifications block of the Tavi. 4 inches required by Two Pages for its motorised Alvin roller.
The verbs are the brands’ own, and they differ. Neutral recommends 2 1/2 inches for its motorised system; Two Pages requires 4 inches for its own. That is a gap between two headrails, not between two ideas of motorisation.
The Tavi figure travels with a caveat. Further down the same page, the FAQ answers the depth question with “2 inches”, in a block discussing roman shades, on a listing for a roller shade. The specifications figure is the one kept here, the contradiction is reported rather than settled, and the number is never quoted alone.
So on a reveal of two inches this set leaves the cellular shade, plus a shutter that asks for 1 3/4 inches and mounts inside only. Everything else is out, which is worth knowing before comparing what each shade family does with a shallow reveal.

One listing asks the window to qualify. Eleven say nothing about shape
Every listing here describes what it will do. One describes what the window has to do first.
Two Pages, on its Veritas hardwood shutter: the difference between the two diagonal measurements should be within 1/2 inch. That is a test an opening passes or fails, and it is the only one in this set. The same page adds two constraints in the same register: the shutter is inside-mount only, so there is no falling back onto the surrounding wall, and the brand notes that a hollow wall may compromise the stability of the frame. Its finished width is typically 1/2 inch narrower than the ordered width.
A rigid frame cannot follow an opening that is out of true. There is nothing dishonest in saying so; this is the one page here candid enough to. The silence of the other eleven does not mean their products are indifferent to a crooked window. It means the question is not answered on the page.
That silence runs wider than squareness. Across these twelve listings there is nothing at all about arched or round windows, nothing about bays or corners, and nothing about running two shades on a single headrail. We are not concluding that such products do not exist, only that these twelve pages do not mention them.

A window you are not allowed to drill
Renting narrows the field to whatever hangs on something already there, and this set holds one.
Half Price Drapes sells a cotton tie-up shade in one ready-made size, 46 inches wide by 63 inches long, and its rod pocket accommodates poles up to 1 1/2 inches in diameter. The brand is straight about the limit: it calls the shade stationary, not designed to be raised and lowered daily the way a roman or a roller is. So it covers a window, in one size, and it is not a mechanism. It also carries a permanent discount badge, which is merchandising rather than a promotion, and it is not treated as one here.
The made-to-measure route is to buy the absence of a drill as an option. Two Pages lists a no-drill version of its Aura cellular shade at $88.99, against $68.99 for the cordless version of the same 225 gsm fabric with the same 1-inch pleat, on 22 August 2026. Same cloth, different mounting. The difference is mechanism, not material.

What none of these listings publish about a difficult window
A missing number is a nuisance on an ordinary window. On a difficult one it is the entire problem.
Five of the twelve publish no size range. Their configurators may well accept the dimensions; the page will not say so beforehand.
A product named Extra Wide publishes no maximum width. Neutral’s extra-wide bamboo shade with top-down bottom-up operation carries the words in its own title and states nowhere how wide it goes. Which opening it covers cannot be said, and it is not being guessed from the name.

A curtain sold up to 240 by 300 inches publishes no maximum panel weight, and neither it nor the Half Price Drapes extra-wide panel publishes a stack back, the width an open panel occupies beside the glass. On a small window, that is the figure that decides whether any glass is left.
One bamboo listing publishes no minimum depth while two sister listings from the same merchant publish 2 1/2 inches for the same motorised system. The neighbour’s number is not borrowed here.
And our limit, plainly: we do not drill walls, install anything or measure any product. Everything above is what these twelve pages printed on the day they were read.

Three numbers to find before you decide the window is the problem
Before concluding that the window is the difficult party, look for three numbers on the listing itself, not on the brand’s home page.
The smallest width it accepts. Below it, no configurator rescues the order.
The greatest length it accepts. This is where the set is most generous and most uneven: 72 inches on one listing, 300 on another.
The depth it requires. Seven listings here publish one, and they run from 1 3/4 to 4 inches.
If a listing publishes none of the three, the difficulty is not in the wall. It is in the catalogue, and the move is to ask for those three numbers in writing before choosing a fabric.

How small a window can a made-to-measure shade cover?
What these listings publish: 18 inches wide at the minimum on the Two Pages Patti roman shade in its manual version, 21 inches on Neutral’s Tavi roller shade, and 22 inches on both Neutral’s motorised roman shade and the motorised Alvin roller. On height, the smallest published figure is 14 inches, at Neutral. Five of the twelve publish no range at all, and none is estimated here.
My recess is only two inches deep. What is left?
One listing in this set goes below that: the Two Pages Aura Day Night cellular shade, at 2 inches, 2 1/4 inches for a flush fit, published separately on the same line. The Veritas shutter asks for 1 3/4 inches but mounts inside only. Does motorising change which windows are eligible?
On these pages, twice over. The Patti listing publishes 18 to 84 inches of width in manual and 27 to 96 inches motorised, so a narrow window loses the motor and a tall one loses the manual version. Depth follows: Two Pages requires 4 inches for its motorised roller, where Neutral recommends 2 1/2 inches for its own motorised system. The difference in wording is theirs, not ours.
Is there an off-the-shelf answer for a window I cannot drill?
One in this set, and a limited one. The Half Price Drapes tie-up shade exists in a single size, 46 by 63 inches, and slides onto a pole up to 1 1/2 inches in diameter. The brand itself describes it as stationary, not built to be raised and lowered every day. On the made-to-measure side, Two Pages listed a no-drill version of its Aura cellular shade at $88.99 against $68.99 for the cordless version of the same fabric on 22 August 2026.
What does “extra wide” actually mean?
Two different things, depending on the merchant. At Half Price Drapes it is a fixed 100-inch width in four lengths, with no width to choose. At Neutral Curtains it is the name of a bamboo shade whose page publishes no maximum width at all, which means the opening it covers cannot be stated from the listing.
