Seven motorized shades and one motorized curtain track, from two merchants, were read on their own product pages on 22 August 2026, alongside a third merchant that turns out to sell no motorisation at all. The listed prices run from $39.99 to $205.99, and that range explains almost nothing, because on seven of those eight pages the number you see is not the number that motorises anything. What the range does hide is the more interesting decision: the same configurator that buries the motor also asks you, in passing, how the top of your window will look and how deep the shade will stack when it is up. Those steps cost a fraction of the motor and they are the ones you will see every day.
The listed price of a motorised shade does not include the motor
Two Pages sells a shade called Alvin Motorized Blackout Boutique Roller Shade. It is listed at $43.79, the same figure on all nine colourways. The word Motorized is in the product title, and the motor is not in the price.
Open the configurator on that page and the lift is a paid step: Cordless(Motorized) is charged $153.99 on top, in the option payload the page serves today. That figure comes with a caveat we are not going to bury: the same page also carries an older option block quoting $138.99 for the identical option, and pricing the manual lift at nothing where the current block charges $39.99. Two numbers, one page. We record both and we never quote one on its own.
Neutral Curtains is blunter about it. Its Custom Motorized Roman Shade & Blinds shows $39.99 for the Lily collection, then its own configurator adds the motor at $118.00, a one-channel remote at $19.90 and a wifi hub power supply at $15.99, and the page prints the sum itself: Selection will add $153.89 to the price.
So the useful question on this page is not which shade is cheapest. It is what each listed number covers, and where the motor is hiding.
Which is worth stating plainly before the numbers start, because the thing being sold at that step is not visible in any photograph. Two shades in the same fabric, one motorised and one not, hang identically and fold identically. The difference is at the edge of the window, where the corded one carries a chain or a wand and the motorised one carries nothing at all.

These eight figures rest on four different kinds of base, which is why none of them is ranked against another here.
A configurator floor, fabric only. The Alvin roller sits at $43.79 and the Brio Smart Motorized Light Filtering Zebra Shade at $68.99, before size and before lift.
A collection floor. Two Pages prices its Smart Motorized Plain Roman Shade from $49.99 for the Kyla fabric, and its nine collections climb to $119.00 for Holly. Its Smart Motorized Window Woven Bamboo Shades open at $89.99 for Rae Series S and reach $129.99.

One of those floors is dressed up, and it should not be relayed as a saving. Neutral’s motorised roman shade displays Regular price $79.99 / Sale price $39.99 / Save $40.00 on its cheapest collection, but that same $79.99 compare-at figure sits on all ten collections, which puts it below the selling price on three of them, including the Belgian and Meadow fabrics at $99.99. An anchor that drops under the price it is anchoring is merchandising, not a reduction.
The floors also hide different working ranges. The motorised Alvin roller is made from 22 to 98 inches wide and 20 to 118 inches long; the motorised roman shade from Two Pages runs 24 to 98 inches in both directions; Neutral takes 22 to 98 inches wide and 14 to 119 inches long, in eighths of an inch. A tall narrow window can fall outside one merchant’s envelope and inside another’s, and no price comparison survives that.

The comparison people expect, motorised versus manual, collapses under the same test. The Brio zebra costs $68.99 on its motorised listing and $68.99 on its cordless one, with the same headrail, the same 2 7/8-inch depth and the same 1 1/2-inch fabric gap published on both. Neutral’s motorised bamboo carries exactly the six base prices of its non-motorised bamboo listing: $65.00, $79.00, $81.50, $98.50, $102.00 and $125.00. Nothing moved, because the motor was never in that column. What a made-to-measure floor does and does not cover is a pattern across the whole category, not just this one: what you are actually paying for on a made-to-measure order is worth reading before any configurator opens, and the roller and cellular family has its own listing-by-listing map.

What the last step of the configurator actually charges
Set the products aside and compare the options instead. It is the same motor question at both merchants, and they answer it in different currencies of detail.
Neutral prices four separate lines. Motorization, $118.00, identical on all three of its motorised listings. A 1-Channel Remote at $19.90, which the brand describes as optional and then, in the same breath, as required to have at least one for initial setup. A wifi hub power supply at $15.99. And on the bamboo listing, a 6-inch front valance at $5.00. The page adds them up in front of you: $153.89 on the roman shade, $158.89 on the bamboo.
Two Pages charges the motor as a lift option ($153.99, with the divergence noted above) and then gives away what Neutral bills for: its 1-channel and 15-channel remotes carry no published surcharge, on any listing. Its solar panel option is $19.99. And two of its five motorised listings, the roman shade and the woven bamboo, publish no motor surcharge at all, even though the roller and zebra pages from the same merchant do.

Notice which line on that list is the cheapest. The 6-inch front valance at $5.00 is the only option in either configurator that changes what the window looks like rather than how it works: it is a band of fabric covering the rail, so the top edge of the treatment reads as cloth instead of as metal. Everything above it on the invoice, from $15.99 to $153.99, buys a mechanism you will never see. That is a fair description of what motorisation is: you are paying, at the top of the range, for the removal of a visible operating part. No cord down one side, no wand, no chain. The window stops having an interface, and the eye reads fabric and then wall. Whether that is worth $153.99 is a decision about the room, not about the shade, and the configurator will never frame it that way.
That is the part worth carrying away. The word Motorized in a product title is a label a merchant chose, not a line on your invoice, the same gap between the name and the specification that runs through the four words the whole category is sold under.

When the motor is the product, the price says so
The Lark track is the exception that makes the rule legible. It is listed at $205.99 and the motor is inside that figure, because here the motor is the entire product: an aluminium alloy track rated to 110 lbs on a solid wall, running on AC 110-240V with a 9W rating and a 118-inch plug-in lead.
Two Pages publishes the rest of the electronics the way a hardware brand would. A 433.92 MHz RF remote with a stated range of 98 to 164 feet. A motor that engages when you pull the curtain about 4 inches by hand, and that can still be worked manually during a power cut. A lithium battery the brand itself calls a backup with limited runtime: this is a track you plug in.
It comes in three fixed lengths (122 inches, 200 3/4 inches and 279 1/2 inches) and the brand is explicit that the length you order includes 4 inches added by the hooks when they rotate horizontally, so the track you measure for is not quite the track you hang.
Two exclusions are printed just as plainly, and both cost money. Curtain panels are not included, and every track carries two panels on a two-way opening only. The Zigbee gateway is not included either, which matters because the track’s smart-home list (the TuyaSmart and SmartLife apps, Alexa, Google Assistant) is shorter than the four-ecosystem list Two Pages advertises on its shades.
Read two-way opening only as a design constraint and not just a wiring one. It means the curtain parts in the middle and stacks at both ends, every time, which is the formal, symmetrical arrangement, and it rules out the single panel drawn to one side that suits a window sitting close to a corner or to a return wall. It also means you need clear wall on both sides for the panels to sit on, not just on one. And because the track comes in three fixed lengths rather than cut to your opening, that wall has to absorb whichever of the three overshoots your window: the shortest is a little over ten feet. On a wide opening the track disappears above the panels and no one will ever notice it. On a normal-sized window it is the largest single object you will have mounted on that wall.

One thing on this listing should not be relayed as a saving. Its compare-at price is identical to its selling price on five of the six variants: $205.99 against $205.99, $233.89 against $233.89, and so on. A discount of nothing, displayed as a discount.
Motorized shades do not choose your window. The headrail does
Motorised shades are often described as needing a deeper recess. On these listings, that is true, but the number belongs to the merchant, not to the mechanism.
Two Pages requires 4 inches of inside-mount depth on its motorised roller, its motorised roman shade and its motorised woven bamboo. Its motorised zebra needs 2 7/8 inches, from the same merchant, with the same kind of motor. Neutral recommends 2 1/2 inches for its motorised system, on the two listings that publish a figure at all, and its motorised bamboo publishes none, so we are not lending it the number from its neighbours.
Note the verbs. One merchant states a requirement, the other a recommendation, and the gap between the two smallest and largest figures here is an inch and an eighth.

Then there is the window the mechanism eats even when it fits. Neutral publishes a stack height of approximately 7 to 10 inches on its motorised roman shade and a minimum of 7 inches on its bamboo shades, raised. It also removes 3/8 of an inch from the width you measure, by default, on both bamboo listings (it will skip that deduction if you write it on the order) and warns that a handmade shade can land about 0.4 inches off the size you asked for.
That stack is the part of this page you will look at every day. Seven to ten inches of folded fabric sitting at the top of the opening is a band roughly as deep as a hand is long, and it does not go away when the shade is up: on a short window it takes a visible share of the glass, while on a tall one it reads as a pelmet and the proportion holds. This is the argument for mounting outside the frame and above it wherever the wall allows: the stack then rests on plaster instead of on the view, and the window you kept is the window you measured.
The 3/8 of an inch works the other way. It is a gap down each side, and a gap is not a rounding error in a bedroom: it is the line of daylight that appears along the frame at the hour you wanted the room dark. Two Pages publishes the same problem in the open on its zebra shade, which leaves a stated 1 1/2 inch light gap. Neutral will skip its deduction if you ask on the order; that request costs nothing and it is the difference between a shade that sits in the reveal and one that fills it.

Depth is not the only clearance a motor asks for. The Lark track needs 4 inches above a single track and 7 7/8 inches for a double. The motorised bamboo shade hides its mechanism in a 6-inch built-in valance, and its bracket changes size depending on which colourway you order: 1 9/16 by 2 3/8 inches on nine references, 1 3/8 by 1 3/4 on the rest.
Those numbers describe something you will see, not just something that has to fit. A motor lives in a headrail, and the headrail is a horizontal bar across the top of the window: 3 1/8 inches high in bare aluminium on the Two Pages roller, 2 3/4 by 2 inches on its roman shade, and 3 inches deep on the zebra, where Two Pages colour-matches the metal to the fabric rather than leaving it silver. That last choice is the whole difference between a rail that disappears into the treatment and one that draws a bright line above it. The bamboo shade takes the third route and buries the mechanism behind six inches of woven valance, which is why it is the only one of these listings whose top edge looks like a decision rather than like hardware. If your window sits in a room where nothing else is metal, the rail is the first thing to ask about, and on two of these listings, ordering a different colourway is what changes it. One merchant sells no motor at all
Of the three merchants tracked here, one publishes no motorised listing at all (its roman shades offer a single lift, a beaded continuous loop), checked 22 August 2026. The mechanism is described on its own product pages: a looped chain pulling through a clutch mounted at the head rail, with one choice to make, the side the cord hangs on.
For a reader, that is not a verdict on quality. It is a scoping fact. At that merchant the motorisation question does not arise, and a different one takes its place: a continuous loop is a cord, and the question that replaces motorisation there is cord safety.
There is a second thing that choice decides, and the listing states it without framing it as a choice at all: you pick the side the cord hangs on. That loop is a permanent vertical line down one edge of the window, at eye level, in the room. It is the visible difference between these two families: a motorised shade has no operating part on show, so the eye reads fabric and then wall, while a corded one always has something hanging beside the fabric. Pick the side away from where you sit and away from where the room is entered, and the line stops competing with the window. It is a free decision, made once, at the order step. The absences are consistent enough to be a pattern, and they are all in the same place: the motor.
Not one of the eight listings publishes a battery life. Not one publishes a noise level in decibels. Not one names the motor’s brand or reference. All three Neutral listings sell motorisation without stating the power type: the configurator asks which side you want the charging port on, and never says what is being charged. Two of the five Two Pages listings sell a motorised product without publishing what the motor costs.
Meanwhile the fabric is documented to the gram. The Two Pages motorised roman shade publishes ten fibre compositions and ten weights, from Patti at 100% Belgian linen, 248 gsm to Isabella at 76% polyester and 24% cotton, 500 gsm, on a page that says nothing about the motor beyond the ecosystems it talks to.
Take that gap seriously, because it is the one decision on this page that changes what the window looks like. Those two fabrics are the same product, the same motor and the same headrail, and they will not fold the same way. At 248 gsm a pure linen shade is light enough to crease rather than to crush, and it stacks into soft, slightly irregular folds that read as a room someone lives in: the texture is the point, and so is the fact that linen does not pretend to be flat. At 500 gsm the polyester-cotton is twice the cloth: it stacks into deep, even, self-repeating folds, it hangs dead straight against the glass, and it reads as tailored where the linen reads as relaxed. Neither is better. But a folded shade shows its weight more plainly than a flat one does, since every fold is the fabric doubling back on itself, and this is a listing where the price steps up with the weight, so the choice you are actually making at that step is a style, not an upgrade.

Ask for the price with the motorised lift already selected, the remote included and your window size entered, and compare that total, never the thumbnail.
Three checks make that concrete, and all three come from these listings. Find the lift step. On four of these pages it is where the motor is billed; on two it is silent, which means you ask before you order rather than after. Read the remote line. One merchant charges $19.90 for a remote it calls optional and then says you need at least one; the other publishes no remote surcharge at all. Check the published depth against your recess, and treat 4 inches as the working assumption until the listing says otherwise.

Does the price of a motorised shade include the motor?
On the eight listings read here, one does: the Lark curtain track at $205.99, where the motor is the product. Everywhere else the motor is a configurator option: $118.00 at Neutral Curtains, and $153.99 at Two Pages, whose page also publishes $138.99 for the same option in an older block.
Why does a motorised listing sometimes cost the same as the manual one?
Because the listed floor pays for fabric, not mechanism. The Brio zebra is $68.99 on both its motorised and its cordless listing, with the same headrail, depth and light gap published on each. Neutral’s motorised bamboo shows the same six base prices as its non-motorised bamboo listing.
How deep does my window recess need to be?
It depends on the merchant more than on the motor. Two Pages requires 4 inches on its motorised roller, roman and bamboo shades, and 2 7/8 inches on its motorised zebra. Neutral recommends 2 1/2 inches on the two listings that publish a figure; its motorised bamboo publishes none.
What else do I have to buy to make it work?
What the listings publish: at Neutral, a $19.90 one-channel remote described as optional but required to have at least one for initial setup, and a $15.99 wifi hub power supply. At Two Pages, remotes carry no published surcharge and the solar panel option is $19.99. On the Lark track, the Zigbee gateway is required and not included, and the curtain panels are sold separately.
How long does the battery last, and how loud is it?
Neither figure is published on any of these eight listings. We are not estimating them, and they are the two questions worth putting to a merchant in writing before you order.
