The listed prices run from $41.99 to $129.98, and none of them is the price of a fitted shade. What decides the outcome on your window is mostly not in that number: it is the depth of your recess, the width the factory takes off, and which lift you choose.
The flattest thing here needs the deepest window
A roller shade is one sheet of fabric on a tube. A cellular shade is a stack of pleated honeycomb cells. Nothing about how they look tells you which one needs the deeper window, and the published order runs backwards from the guess.
Two Pages asks for 4 inches of window depth for an inside-mounted motorised roller shade. For its Aura cellular shade, the same merchant asks 2 inches, or 2 1/4 if you want it mounted flush. The zebra shade sits between them at 2 7/8 inches, and 3 1/2 flush.
The reason is the box above the fabric, not the fabric. The motorised roller carries an aluminium headrail of 3 1/8 inches high by 2 15/16 deep, on a bracket of 1 9/16 by 2 15/16. The cellular headrail is 2 3/16 deep by 1 3/8 high. A motor and a tube need room that a stack of collapsed cells does not.
That box is also the part of the shade you look at when the shade is up. A headrail 3 1/8 inches high is a bar as deep as three stacked fingers running the whole width of the window; at 1 3/8 inches the cellular rail is closer to a shadow line. In a shallow reveal the difference decides whether the treatment reads as a piece of fabric or as a piece of equipment, and it is decided before you have chosen a colour. The two families also finish differently at the top: a roller ends in a tube of rolled cloth inside a cassette, a smooth cylinder, while a cellular collapses into a compressed band of pleats that keeps the honeycomb texture visible even closed. Neither is neutral, and neither is mentioned on the size chart.

Neutral Curtains publishes 3 5/8 inches for its Tavi roller shade in the specification block, then answers “2 inches” to a depth question in the FAQ further down the same page, a FAQ that is talking about roman shades. We take the larger figure and say so; a listing that contradicts itself is a reason to ask before ordering, not a reason to pick the number you prefer.
Three of these nine listings publish no depth at all, including a cordless roller shade whose motorised sibling publishes one. If your recess is under three inches, most of the decision has already been made for you, and you will have to ask two of these merchants to confirm it. It is the same ordering that runs through the wider category, where the shade and blind families sort themselves by mechanism rather than by how they look.

The width you order is not the width that gets covered
Every inside mount is a subtraction. Two different subtractions hide under the same word, and confusing them is how a shade ends up with a stripe of daylight down one side.
The first is the deduction you apply before ordering. Two Pages asks for the casing width minus 1/4 inch on its cellular shades, and minus 3/8 on the roller shades that publish the rule at all. Its motorised listing does not. Neutral asks for 3/8 as well, and adds that the deduction is taken from the headrail width, not the fabric.
The second is what is left over after the shade is built, and one listing prints it. On the Brio zebra shade, Two Pages states that the fabric ends up 1 1/2 inches narrower than the width you order, because the width you order is the tube, its components and the cassette valance. On a 60-inch opening that is an inch and a half of window that was never going to be covered.

Two different numbers hide under the same word. A deduction is what you take off the casing before ordering; a light gap is what the finished shade still leaves uncovered afterwards. One listing here publishes the second. 1 of these 9 listings publishes neither, and we are not estimating one.

Two brands say the quiet part out loud. On the woven wood roller shade, Two Pages writes that there will be slight gaps at the sides from the fabric deduction, and recommends an outside mount (2 to 4 inches of extra width, with no minimum depth) if light blockage matters more than a flush look. Neutral goes further on the Tavi: for 100% blackout, choose the front valance, because the back valance may let light in from the sides, the headrail being around two inches deep.
That is the useful lesson of this whole family. On a roller or a cellular shade, the light at the edges is a hardware decision (cassette, valance, mount type) long before it is a fabric decision.
And it is a look decision at the same time, which is why it is worth settling early rather than at the last configurator step. An inside mount sits the shade in the reveal: the frame stays visible all the way round, the window keeps its own outline, and you accept the strip of daylight down each side. An outside mount, the 2 to 4 inches of extra width Two Pages recommends, covers the frame entirely: the window loses its outline and gains a clean rectangle of fabric that reads larger than the glass behind it. On a small or awkward opening that is usually flattering. On a handsome frame it is a shame. The price on the listing is the fabric, not the mechanism
All nine of these are made to measure, and every figure below is a floor with the size still to be entered. That alone should stop anyone ranking them. But there is a sharper reason to distrust the number, and it comes from two listings of the same fabric.
Two Pages sells its Boutique blackout roller shade cordless at $49.89 across ten colourways, and the motorised version of the same Boutique fabric at $43.79 across nine, seven of which carry identical fabric codes. The motorised shade is the cheaper listing. Whatever these prices track, it is not the lift, and the cost of motorisation is not published on any of these pages: it appears once you configure.
The cellular range makes the same point in the other direction. Same fabric at 225 gsm, same one-inch honeycomb pleat, and six listings: $68.99 cordless blackout, $82.99 top-down bottom-up, $88.99 no-drill, $98.99 day-night, $102.99, $118.99. Fifty dollars between the ends of that range, and not one gram of fabric difference.

Across the roller collection the spread is wider still: fourteen Alvin listings from $39.29 to $62.99, and a single woven wood shade at $129.98. And the bases are not even the same shape: one listing quotes the lowest of twenty-three colourways that range from $41.99 to $43.79, others quote one identical floor for every colour, and Neutral’s bamboo shade is sold as Base Price plus add-ons across six collections priced from $65.00 to $125.00. Comparing those figures to each other tells you nothing. Comparing what each one covers tells you everything, and that is the same arithmetic that runs every made-to-measure order.

Cordless, corded, motorised: what each one costs the wall
Motorisation is the choice that changes the physical envelope most, and the specification block shows it. The motorised roller shade needs its 4 inches of depth, carries an aluminium headrail 2 15/16 inches deep and 3 1/8 high, and comes with a published size range of 22 to 98 inches wide and 20 to 118 inches long. Two Pages lists compatibility with Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa and SmartThings. What it does not list is the power type, rechargeable, solar or wired, which is another thing you find out at configuration.
Corded is the plainest. Neutral’s Tavi is a corded lift, sized between 21 and 80 inches wide and 20 and 119 long, in eighths of an inch.
Cordless is where the boxes differ most, and it is worth checking before you buy a drill bit. The Brio zebra lists its contents to the nail: 2 brackets, 2 screws, 2 nails, 1 shade, plus the tools you are expected to supply: drill, drill bit, awl, ruler, pencil, screwdriver. Three other listings here say “installation hardware included” and stop there; Neutral at least specifies that the screws provided are for drywall, into a stud or solid wood.

Two choices further down the same configurator change the hardware without changing the fabric. On the Alvin rollers, roll position is one of them: a standard roll takes a curved cassette, a reverse roll a square one.
That one is worth slowing down for, because it is the only free step in the configurator that changes the silhouette of the finished window. Roll position decides which side of the tube the fabric comes off: on a standard roll it drops behind the tube and hugs the glass, on a reverse roll it drops in front and hangs clear of whatever sits below: a deep sill, a window handle, a radiator. The cassette shape follows from it, curved on one and square on the other, and a curved cassette reads as a soft roll at the top of the window where a square one reads as an architectural box. Neither costs anything. Both are permanent once the shade is made. And on both of these cordless roller listings Two Pages advertises the same four smart-home ecosystems, which its own light-filtering listing qualifies, in the same block, as the motorised version.
Two more lines belong in the budget rather than in the price. Two Pages sells warranty as an upgrade (one year free, three years $69, a limited lifetime at $169) and offers in-home installation from $120, which is the floor for the service and not a second price for the shade. Neutral offers one, three and five-year limited warranties and publishes no price for any of them.
Three that stretch the family
A zebra shade is two layers of alternating sheer and opaque bands on one tube; sliding them in and out of alignment is the light control. Two Pages lists one cordless at $68.99 across eight colourways. It publishes no material at all, the only shade listing from this merchant that doesn’t, and no opacity figure, which at least is consistent: on a banded shade the opacity depends on where you stop the bands. What it does publish is the box: a metal headrail 3 inches deep by 3 1/8 high, colour-matched to the fabric, which is why it wants nearly three inches of recess where a cellular shade wants two.
Colour-matched is doing quiet work in that sentence. It is the largest headrail in this comparison, and the only one the merchant does not leave in bare aluminium, so the deepest box here is also the one that disappears, while the shallow cellular rail stays silver above the fabric. On the same wall, in the same recess, the bigger piece of hardware is the less visible one. That is the sort of trade the specification table has no column for.
The day-night cellular shade is the same idea in a honeycomb. A sheer layer for daylight, a blackout layer for night, the same 225 gsm fabric and the same one-inch pleat as the plain blackout cellular, at $98.99 against $68.99. Thirty dollars, for a second layer and the mechanism that moves between them.

Then the outlier. The Rae woven wood roller shade is $129.98 on all thirty colourways, three times the floor of the cheapest roller in the same collection, for the same tube movement. It is titled “Natural Jute”, and the listing never publishes a fibre: it says renewable, eco-conscious materials, and organic substances. We are not filling that blank in. Neutral’s own woven wood shade is a different animal again, sold as Base Price plus add-ons from $65.00, on an aluminium headrail, and it stacks a minimum of 7 inches when fully raised.

Opacity here is a claim, and it has an owner
Across nine listings there is exactly one rated fabric, and the rating belongs to Two Pages: “Blackout Rate: 100%” on the Alvin Boutique blackout cordless roller shade.
It is worth noticing where that number sits. The same listing publishes no fabric weight and no mounting depth. And the motorised version of the same Boutique fabric drops the figure entirely, promising “complete light blockage” instead.
The rest of the family speaks the same way. The Aura cellular shade is described as high-density blackout fabric with an aluminium-coated interior that completely blocks light: no number. The light-filtering roller gently diffuses sunlight while maintaining daytime privacy: no number, on a collection that sells a blackout version separately. Neutral does not rate its fabric either. It makes the darkness conditional on a part instead: front valance for 100% blackout, back valance and light comes in at the sides.
None of that is dishonest. It is an unregulated vocabulary being used carefully by people who have to describe darkness in a photograph. But it does mean the strongest-sounding claim on this page is a manufacturer’s, not a measurement, and Fold & Light does not measure products. If the exact wording matters to your room, the opacity ladder is where those words are pulled apart.
Where you can actually buy a roller shade, and where you cannot
This page leans on one merchant’s range, and the reason is worth stating rather than hiding.
Of the three merchants tracked here, one carries the whole family: 15 roller shade listings from $39.29 to $129.98, 6 cellular shades from $68.99 to $118.99, and 3 zebra shades at $68.99, checked 22 August 2026. Neutral Curtains lists exactly one roller shade and no cellular shade at all, checked the same day, on a catalogue that runs very deep on roman and woven wood shades. And Half Price Drapes lists no roller, cellular or slatted shade whatsoever: 1,108 product URLs in its official sitemap on 22 August 2026, and its own navigation offers roman shades only.

That is availability, not quality. A deep catalogue buys you colourways, lift options and no-drill variants; it does not tell you the fabric is better. Two practical consequences follow. If you want a cordless or motorised roller shade, one of these two merchants has the choice and the other has a single corded listing. And if you want a cellular shade at all, only one of the three sells one.
It also means every shade on this page is made to measure. Not one of the nine is a ready-made size you can carry home and return next week, which is worth knowing before you treat a $41.99 floor as a low-risk purchase. On this particular family a two-merchant comparison is the honest maximum, and anyone offering you a five-brand roller shade ranking is not shopping the same shelves.

Three numbers to write down before you compare two listings
The minimum inside-mount depth. The width deduction, or the light gap if the listing gives one. And what the listed price actually covers.
Four of these nine listings publish all three. The other five leave at least one blank: usually the depth, occasionally the material, and on the motorised shade, the width rule that its own cordless twin prints two clicks away.
A fourth number is worth asking for when nobody prints it: the manufacturing tolerance. Neutral publishes one on the Tavi (a discrepancy greater than 3/8 inch counts as a size error) and another on its bamboo shade, where variations of about 0.4 inch are announced up front. They are the only two listings here that say what “made to measure” is allowed to miss by.
That is not a scandal, it is a shopping instruction. Two shades whose listings answer all three questions can be compared. A shade that answers two of them can still be the right one, as long as you get the third answer from the merchant before the factory cuts anything. How deep does my window need to be for a roller shade?
Deeper than for most of the alternatives, and much deeper if you motorise it. Two Pages asks 4 inches for an inside-mounted motorised roller shade, and Neutral publishes 3 5/8 inches for its corded Tavi, though the FAQ on that same page answers 2 inches, to a question about roman shades. By comparison the cellular shades here ask 2 inches, and the zebra 2 7/8. Three of the nine listings publish no depth requirement at all, so that one is a question for the merchant.
Why is there still a strip of light at the sides?
Because the width you order is not the width of the fabric. One listing puts a number on it: on the Brio zebra shade, the fabric ends up 1 1/2 inches narrower than the ordered width, which measures the tube and cassette. Elsewhere it is a deduction taken before you order (1/4 inch on the cellular shades, 3/8 on the rollers) and on the woven wood shade the brand says outright that there will be gaps at the sides, and points you to an outside mount with 2 to 4 extra inches of width.
Does a motorised shade cost more than a cordless one?
These listings cannot tell you. At Two Pages the same Boutique fabric is listed at $49.89 cordless and $43.79 motorised, with seven colourways in common, so the figure on the page is tracking fabric rather than lift. The price of motorisation itself is not published on any of these product pages; it appears once you configure the shade.
What is a zebra shade?
Two layers of alternating sheer and opaque bands rolling on a single tube. Aligning the opaque bands closes the shade, offsetting them lets light through. On the one listing verified here (Two Pages, cordless, $68.99 floor across eight colourways) the brand publishes neither a material nor an opacity figure, and the second omission at least follows from the design.
Are cellular shades really more insulating?
The brand says the honeycomb structure creates an insulating air pocket. It publishes no R-value, no percentage and no energy saving, so there is nothing here to quantify and we are not inventing a figure. What is verified is the geometry (an approximately one-inch honeycomb pleat at 225 gsm) and the shallowest mounting depth on this page, 2 inches.
Is a shade sold as “100% blackout” really 100%?
That is the figure the manufacturer publishes: “Blackout Rate: 100%” on Two Pages’ Alvin Boutique blackout cordless roller shade. Two things from the same catalogue argue for reading it as a claim rather than a measurement. The motorised version of that identical fabric says only “complete light blockage”, with no number. And at Neutral, the blackout of a roller shade depends on which valance you pick, not on the fabric alone.
