A portiere is just a curtain hung across a doorway, an old idea for holding heat in one room and keeping a sightline out of another. The catalogue does not sell one. None of the three brands read for this page, Two Pages, Neutral Curtains and Half Price Drapes, lists a “doorway curtain” or a “portiere.” What you buy is a window panel, and you hang it on an opening that is nothing like a window.
Is a Doorway Curtain Just a Small Curtain?
A window is wide and tall, and you look at it. A doorway is narrow, short, and you walk through it. A standard interior door is about 32 inches wide and 80 inches tall, so the panel has to cover roughly a third of the width most curtains are cut for, and stop well short of a window’s drop. That gap decides the first choice, before fabric. Four of the six products here are made to order in a configurator (Two Pages Birkin and Joy, Neutral Maillard and Meadow), so they can be built to the opening. The Half Price Drapes Signature Velvet panel is a fixed 50 inches wide. Put a 50 inch panel over a 32 inch door and you have around 18 inches of cloth to gather, which seals a draught quite well, but you are still gathering a window’s width across a door. Fix the opening first. The fabric is the second decision, and this is the wider field of door and patio openings that the panels were really cut for.
Measure the Door, Not a Window
On a window you hang high and let the hem float or puddle. A doorway is the opposite problem. None of these listings publishes a length made for a door, so length here is a fitting decision, not a spec on a page. You fix the rod just above the casing and stop the hem clear of the floor, because a panel you pass every day cannot drag or pool where feet go. A window-length puddle in a doorway is not a soft, formal look, it is something to step over.

The three lengths are three deliberate looks: clean and practical, tailored, or soft and formal. An inch of daylight under the hem is none of them: it reads as a curtain ordered in the wrong size, which is exactly what it is.

The one panel that does list fixed lengths, the Half Price Drapes Signature Velvet, comes in 63, 84, 96, 108 and 120 inches. On an 80 inch door the 84 inch length is the one that reaches the floor from a casing-height rod with a little to spare. The 63 sits well short, and the longer three are cut for tall windows. That is the whole length decision on a door: enough to reach, not so much that it pools in the walkway.
The One Rod in the Catalogue Won’t Shrink to a Door
Here is where the catalogue quietly fails a doorway. Only one piece of hardware was verified across these brands, the Half Price Drapes Glass Sphere rod, a telescoping set that Half Price Drapes says expands from 52 to 144 inches. Read the small number, not the large one. Its shortest span is 52 inches, and a door is about 32. The only rod in the catalogue does not close down far enough to cross a doorway. It is built for a wide window or a patio opening, which is the opposite of what a door is.

The panels do not rescue you either. They ship with hooks, and their own pages say rings and rods are sold separately, so the part that actually carries a curtain across the gap is never in the box. On a doorway that makes the rod the first purchase to solve, and you solve it outside the panel listing. If you cannot drill, a tension rod inside the door reveal holds a light panel with no wall fixing at all.

Tension rods only work inside a reveal, which means the curtain sits in the window rather than around it: no width gained, no height gained, and light down both sides. Worth knowing before you fall for a look that needs a wall fixing.

If the doorway still has its door, there is a better answer than a fixed rod above it, and it is the reason the portiere existed in the first place.
Another way to do it
Put a doorway panel on a rod that swings with the door
For a doorway that still has its door, a hinged swing-arm rod fixes to the door frame so the panel opens with the door and falls back across the gap when it shuts. For an open doorway with no door, a tension rod inside the reveal or a fixed rod just above the casing does the same job without hardware in the wall.
A doorway is a threshold you walk through, not a window you look at, so the panel has to get out of the way and then come back on its own. A fixed rod above the opening leaves the curtain to be shoved aside by hand every time, and it swings straight back across the gap; a swing-arm rod carries the panel clear as the door opens and returns it as the door closes, which is the whole reason a portiere existed, a draught and sightline break between two rooms with nothing extra to move. Whichever rod you use, the hem has to clear the floor, because a panel that puddles into a doorway is a panel people tread on.
An arrangement, not a recommendation to buy anything. It works with whatever you already own.
Half Price Drapes does not publish a load rating for the Glass Sphere rod, and lists no centre support, even though it is sold out to 144 inches. Across a narrow door that is no concern, since a short span carries a panel easily. It only matters if you are tempted to reuse the same rod on a wide open span, where an unstated load limit is a real gap, or you go looking at how a rod’s minimum span is set before you buy.
Weight Decides Whether It Stops a Draught or Breathes
On a window, fabric weight is mostly a question of light. On a door it is a question of air and movement, because you push the panel aside and it separates the air of two rooms. That reframes the whole ladder.

Four of these panels publish a gram weight, and they line up cleanly. The two sheers are both sold as linen: Two Pages lists the Joy at 105 gsm, Neutral lists the Meadow at 165. Same fibre by name, and the heavier one is 57 percent heavier, which is what a sheer’s weight tells you before its name does: the difference between a panel you can read a shape through and one that only softens it. A sheer at 105 gsm breathes. It lets kitchen air move and breaks a sightline without sealing the gap, which is what a pantry or a kitchen doorway usually wants. The two velvets sit far up the ladder, the Neutral Maillard at 285 gsm and the Two Pages Birkin at 300. At that weight a panel hangs still instead of fluttering, and it falls back across the opening on its own once you have passed through, which is exactly how a portiere blunts a draught off a stairwell or an entry.

Real view-blocking is a separate case, for a doorway you want dark or hidden, like a laundry or a closet. The Half Price Drapes Signature Velvet is the panel for that. Half Price Drapes rates it at 90 percent blackout, and its own page credits the darkness to an off-white thermal lining, not to the velvet. Ninety percent is room darkening rather than true blackout by the trade’s own terms, but across a closet doorway it hides what is behind it. One caveat the page leaves open: Half Price Drapes does not publish a gram weight for this panel, so unlike the four above, its drape is not something you can predict from the listing.

Two of these are configurator floors. The Two Pages Joy starts at $69 and the Neutral Maillard at $65.99, and both pages are explicit that the size you choose is billed on top of that base. Neutral even prints “Total Price = Base Price + Add-ons.” The Half Price Drapes Signature is a fixed-size panel at $92.94 for the 84 inch length, priced by length up its size range. And the rod is its own line at $52.49, because no panel here includes one. For a doorway the useful question is not which panel is cheapest, it is what each price still leaves you to pay to make it fit: a made-to-order base leaves out the size, a ready-made leaves in a width you did not choose, and the rod is extra in every case. The standing 50 percent off badge on the Half Price Drapes pages is not a sale to plan around. It sits against an anchor that never moves.
Three Doorways, Three Panels
Three openings, three answers, and the choice follows the job the doorway does.
For a door between two rooms, or at the foot of a stairwell, where the point is to stop a draught, a heavy velvet earns its place: the Neutral Maillard at 285 gsm or the Two Pages Birkin at 300, built to the opening in the configurator, hem stopped clear of the floor so it swings. The weight is what makes it hang still and fall back closed.
For a pantry or a kitchen doorway that has to keep breathing, a linen sheer is the lighter, better-tempered choice: the Two Pages Joy at 105 gsm, or the Neutral Meadow at 165 if you want a little more cover, hung on a tension rod inside the reveal so nothing gets drilled.
For a closet or a laundry you actually want hidden, the Half Price Drapes Signature Velvet does the view-blocking the sheers cannot, at a brand-stated 90 percent, as long as you accept a fixed 50 inch width and a weight the brand does not print.
None of these is a winner over the others. A doorway curtain is chosen the way you would choose a door: by what you need the opening to do.
