Two Pages publishes an eleven-section guide to cleaning a roman shade. Dusting, stain removal, machine washing, dry cleaning, odour removal, troubleshooting, when to stop cleaning and replace the thing. For the cellular shades the same merchant sells, it publishes twenty-nine words, and they are the same twenty-nine words on all six listings, from the $68.99 one to the $118.99 one.

Then the other half. Of the three merchants this site follows, two sell no cellular shade at all, and one of those two publishes the most careful cleaning routine in the set, for a different construction.

So there is no industry consensus on how to clean cellular shades. There is one sentence, and this page takes it seriously: what it permits, what it quietly rules out, and the three gestures it leaves you.

Six listings, one sentence, and it is the same sentence

The instruction reads: “Cellular shades are easy to clean window treatments that have anti-static and dust repellent properties. Clean them by vacuuming dust off with the brush extension on your vacuum cleaner.” Checked on 19 September 2026, it is identical word for word on all six cellular listings on the domain. Anti-static and dust-repellent are the brand’s words about its own fabric, not a measurement anybody has published.

Now read it beside what it covers: a shade screwed into the reveal and one clamped onto the frame without a screw, a panel with one moving rail and a panel with two. An instruction that does not separate those cases is not describing a technique. It is describing what you may bring near the cloth, which is what a care line usually describes. What changes from listing to listing is what you are holding on to while you do it.

What you paid extra for is hiding behind the fabric

Floor prices first, because they tell you what you bought. The drilled listing starts at $68.99, the one that also comes down from the top at $82.99, the no-drill at $88.99. Every colourway sits at the same figure, none carries a struck-through price, and the size is entered afterwards in the configurator, so each number is a floor and the total turns up later. Neutral Curtains lists a roman shade at $35.99 on a different basis, a base price with add-ons excluded, so the two cannot be set against each other and nothing here ranks them.

Not like-for-like. Each number starts from somewhere different, which makes ordering them meaningless. Check what each one includes first.

Now the cloth, which is where the roller and cellular half of the catalogue normally competes. One hundred per cent polyester at 225 gsm, honeycomb pleats of approximately one inch, a size range of 18 to 98 inches wide by 16 to 94 tall, printed identically on all six pages. Not a cent of the gap between the cheapest listing and the dearest buys fabric. It buys a bracket that clamps instead of screwing, a second moving rail, a second layer of cloth.

Which turns the usual worry around. The part that gets dirty is the cheapest part of the shade and the same one on every listing. The part you paid for sits behind the cloth, and a clumsy clean reaches it. So the question that decides anything is what you are pressing against, rather more than what you are pressing with.

How to clean a cellular shade: start at the rail, work along the pleat

The headrail comes first. Aluminium alloy, published at 2 3/16 inches deep by 1 3/8 high, it is the only horizontal ledge in the assembly and it sits directly above everything else you are about to touch. Clean the face first and the first knock against that rail drops a ledge’s worth of dust down the panel you just finished.

Worth the twenty minutes

Start at the headrail, not at the fabric

Dust the top of the headrail and both bracket ends first, then work down the face.

The rail is the only horizontal ledge on the whole assembly, so it collects far more than the fabric does, and it sits directly above everything you are about to clean. Do the face first and the first knock against the rail drops a ledge's worth of dust down the panel you have just finished.

Then the face, along the pleats and not down them. Each cell is a tube lying on its side, and you are looking at the top of the tube. A brush pulled downwards crosses the mouth of every fold in turn, so what it lifts out of one it pushes into the next. Move along the fold and the bristles stay on the flat, where the dust settled.

Worth the twenty minutes

Lower the shade to its full drop, then run the brush head horizontally, one fold at a time, working from the top down.

A collapsible cell is a tube lying on its side, and the face you see is the top of each tube. A brush dragged vertically crosses every fold mouth in turn and pushes what it lifts into the next one down. Moving along the fold keeps the bristles on the flat of the tube, which is where the dust has settled. Same brush, same two minutes, and the only difference is whether the dust leaves the shade or moves down it.

And keep a hand under the bottom bar throughout. On a cordless lift the mechanism runs inside the panel, and the cells pass along anything you push into them. A flat hand under the bottom rail carries the weight, so the brush works against your hand and not against the lift.

A bracket that clamps is a bracket you can move

The no-drill version costs $88.99 against $68.99 for the same fabric, and those twenty dollars buy brackets that grip the frame without screws, which is a different way of holding a headrail in place. Two Pages publishes no clamp dimension and no range of frame thickness, so the strength of that grip stays unpublished.

What a clamp is designed for, though, is legible from the job it does. A shade hangs, so the load runs downwards and the bracket is sized for a weight that pulls. Dusting is the one moment in that shade’s life when somebody pushes upwards, or sideways, against a rail only ever asked to hold something down.

The common misstep

Move the rail a few millimetres while cleaning and you have moved the gap.

Two blocks below the promise that these are easy-to-clean window treatments, all six pages state that made-to-order shades are not eligible for return, and that a return will be refused for a malfunction caused by tampering with the lift mechanism. Easy to clean, and unreturnable if the cleaning reaches the mechanism, on one page. Neither sentence defines tampering.

Not one of the six listings mentions water. No stain method, no damp cloth, no drying instruction, no frequency, nothing about what to do when something lands on the shade.

Neutral Curtains, which sells no cellular shade at all, publishes four lines for its Lily roman shade. Wipe clean. Weekly dusting with a feather duster or a vacuum brush attachment. Stains dabbed with a soft damp cloth and mild soap, without rubbing. Professional dry cleaning for a thorough clean. And then the warning no cellular listing carries: never machine wash, hand wash or immerse the shade, because it can cause shrinkage, fading or structural damage.

Checked 2026-09-19 against the full public collection list of each domain and each merchant’s own search. Nothing was missed on our side. There is nothing there.

That routine was written for cloth that hangs in open folds. Dab a fold and both faces of it are in the air, so it dries about as fast as it got wet. A cell has no second face you can reach: it is closed along its length, open only at the two side edges of the shade, and lined inside with a coating you cannot inspect. The first two steps of Neutral’s routine carry over to a honeycomb easily. The damp one does not carry over at all, and nobody spells that out, because the merchants who publish cleaning routines here are the ones who do not sell the construction.

Nothing wetter than a cloth you have wrung out

Keep every method on the outside face of a cell. Anything that can run, drip or soak into the structure is a repair, not a clean.

A cell is a closed air chamber, open only at the two side edges of the shade. Water that finds its way in has nowhere to drain and no way to be reached: the cell does not open, you cannot see inside it, and it cannot be dried from the outside. What comes back out is a tide line along the bottom of the cell, and on a metallised liner a mark that shows from the room every time the light is behind the shade.

Geometry and long-standing trade practice, not a brand claim. Check it with a tape measure, not with us.

That absence is what makes the category odd. Neutral Curtains publishes 687 products and the word cellular appears in none of them; Half Price Drapes publishes 2,682 and its only honeycomb is a printed cotton sold by the yard. One merchant of three sells the thing, so the published cleaning instruction for the whole category is that merchant’s twenty-nine words.

What I would buy, knowing how I would have to clean it

If it were my window and I could drill into it, the plain listing at $68.99. The cloth is the same on all six, so every dollar above that figure is another moving part to hold on to each time the brush comes out. If I could not drill, the no-drill at $88.99, and I would read the twenty dollars as the price of a bracket I must never push upwards on. The top-down bottom-up at $82.99 earns its keep on a bathroom window, and what that second rail actually costs is its own piece of arithmetic. On a kitchen window that wants wiping down every few weeks, it is one more rail to support with a hand that is already holding a brush.

Before you buy any shade, open the care block on the listing and count the words in it. Short does not mean easy. It means the construction has already made the maintenance decision for you, and you want to know what it decided while you can still choose a different shade.

Common questions

Can you wash cellular shades? None of the six listings publishes a wet method at all. The only written prohibition in this set is Neutral’s, on a roman shade: never machine wash, hand wash or immerse it.
