What Are Roller Shades? One Tube, and Six Words for the Cloth

In the room

Most window coverings are named after the cloth. A sheer is named for what you can see through, a blackout for what you cannot. A roller shade is named after the thing holding it up, which puts it on its own among the other window treatments.

Open the roller shade collection at Two Pages and you get sixteen listings, floors running from $39.29 to $129.98, one of them a $3.99 fabric booklet. Read four in a row and the paragraph describing the hardware arrives identical every time. The paragraph describing the cloth does not. On two of those listings, checked on 20 September 2026, the cloth paragraph belongs to the other one.

So what are roller shades? The tube is the only part the name guarantees. The rest is on the page in front of you, in two lines.

Everything that makes it a roller shade sits above the cloth

What you are buying is one piece of cloth wound onto a tube, and the tube lives in a box at the top of the window. Two Pages publishes the box: a headrail 3 1/8 in high by 2 15/16 in deep, and a square cassette of 2 15/16 in by 3 3/8 in if you take the reverse roll. Which way the cloth comes off the tube is the only mechanical choice the category asks of you, and it changes the shape of the trim.

Everything else in that box is shared. The two Alvin Basic listings publish the same minimum inside-mount depth of 2 1/2 in and the same 3/8 in off the width. Brio’s zebra asks 2 7/8 in. Neutral’s Tavi asks 3 5/8 in and takes its 3/8 in off at the factory, so there you order the raw window while Two Pages has you order the finished width. Same deduction, opposite instruction, and the person who has to get it right is you.

In the room

So read the depth first: across these five it runs from 2 1/2 in to 3 5/8 in, and it is the line that decides whether an inside mount is possible at all. If the reveal is too shallow, mounting the shade on the wall instead asks no depth at all, 2 to 4 in wider than the frame. What you get for that inch of reveal is a window with nothing in front of the glass once the shade is up.

The cloth can be a woven panel, and the listing stops short of the fibre

The dearest shade in the collection costs $129.98, and you will not be told what it is made of. It is the Rae, a woven panel on the same tube. The description offers “renewable, eco-conscious materials” and “organic substances used in the tightly woven shades”, which are words about sourcing. Jute sits in the title and in no composition line. No fibre, no weight, no opacity level, no size range, and we are not estimating any of them.

In the room

The two cheapest listings in the same collection publish 100% polyester and a gram weight each. Same tube, same brackets, a bit over three times the price.

What the woven panel changes is the window you look at with the shade open, which is most of the day. Two Pages writes that when raised it “forms neat, even pleats”. A polyester screen vanishes into its roll; a woven panel stacks, so a band of shade stays across the top of the opening and the light past it reads as texture.

The one that says room darkening is the one promising total darkness

The titles and the descriptions have traded places, and neither page mentions the other. Their SPECS blocks are the same text: same 18-90 in width range, same cassette, same 2 1/2 in depth, same 3/8 in deduction. Nothing in the hardware tells these two products apart, because there is nothing there to tell apart.

Which leaves you 124 gsm. Each is a single layer of polyester on a tube with nothing behind it, so what holds the light back is the weave, and the heavier weave holds back more. You would see that at two in the afternoon on a sunny wall, and not at two in the morning.

Rule of thumb

On a made-to-order shade, only the lines with numbers describe the product

Judge the shade on its fabric line and its specification block. Treat the title and the feature paragraph as copy until a number backs them up.

A title and a feature paragraph are written by whoever built the listing, and on a made-to-order shade the same merchant can run several of them off one template. A fibre, a gram weight, a minimum depth and a deduction are entered once per product and printed as figures, which is why they are the part of the page that stays consistent with itself. When the words at the top and the words in the middle of a listing say different things, the numbered lines are the ones that were filled in for that product, and they are also the only ones you can hold the merchant to.

Trade convention and proportion, not something a merchant told us. A tape measure settles it faster than we can.

Six words for the cloth, and two figures behind them

Across the sixteen titles, Two Pages uses six opacity words: Sheer, Light Filtering, Room Darkening, Boutique Room Darkening, Blackout and Waterproof Blackout. Two listings put a number to any of it, and they spell the number differently: “Blackout Rate: 100%” on the Boutique and the Waterproof, “Shading rate: 100%” on the Basic Premium. One merchant, one figure, two nouns for it, all on the same afternoon. The same merchant files the family under Window Blinds & Shades in its navigation, which is part of why blinds, shades and roller shades get used as one word.

The Brio makes no numeric claim at all. Two Pages describes alternating sheer and opaque stripes and leaves the level to wherever you stop the roll, which is fair on a zebra: you move the opacity when you move the shade.

Neutral is the one that tells you where the darkness is won or lost. From the Tavi page: “For 100% blackout, please select the front valance. Back valance may let light in from the sides, since the headrail depth is around 2 inches.” A rate describes cloth, and the ladder those words sit on is the same everywhere. A shade that drops in one piece in front of an opening gives up its light at the edges and over the top of the roll, and the front valance closes the top. Neutral will sell you either.

What none of these listings prints

Thirteen of the sixteen roller listings at Two Pages publish no fabric weight. The three that do read 191, 293 and 315 gsm, and all three print the word Heavyweight next to the number, which at 191 gsm is doing a lot of lifting. The Rae publishes no fibre. The Brio publishes no composition of any kind, on a domain where every other shade listing carries one. Neutral publishes no weight for the Tavi.

Then there is the merchant with the vocabulary and no product. Half Price Drapes sells no roller shade: its roller shades collection returns nothing, and its own search for roller comes back with roman shades. Eighteen of its 1,707 public collections are named for a fabric and end in Roller Shade Swatch, from BasketWeave to TabbyWeave, and all eighteen are empty. Take the fibre and the weight off a page and what is left to judge an unseen cloth on is the photograph, and the photograph was lit by the person selling it.

Every shade here is made to order, so every figure you have read is a floor: $39.29, $41.39, $68.99 and $129.98 at Two Pages, $42.99 at Neutral. You put the size in afterwards, in a configurator. That smallest window is 18 in wide on the Alvin Basic pair and 21 in on the Tavi. Yours is wider, which makes the $2.10 between the two Alvin listings the narrowest that gap will ever be.

Nothing here is waiting to go on sale either: not one of these figures is struck through, on any of the sixteen roller listings. The price moves when the window moves.

Worth doing

Find the same fabric on the other listing before you order

Before you order a shade in a named fabric, search the merchant for that same fabric name and compare every listing it appears in, side by side, at the same width and drop.

A merchant rarely sells one fabric once. The same cloth is usually listed several times, one listing per mechanism, and the listings are written by different hands on different days. Two of them can carry a different maximum drop, a different head rail, a different set of lift options and a different size table, with nothing on either page telling you the other exists. Pulling them up together is the only way to see what the mechanism is actually costing you, and the only way to catch the one that cannot be ordered at your window.

Before you order

Open the two listings of the same range side by side and read only the lines with numbers in them. If the hardware blocks match word for word, whatever separates those two products is in the cloth, and the cloth is two lines long.

If it were my window and I wanted a dark bedroom, I would spend the $2.10 and take the Premium Blackout. That is 124 gsm more cloth and the only opacity figure either page prints. The cheaper listing being the lighter one is also the single thing on those two pages that hangs together. If you want daylight with the glare taken out, neither of those two is sold for that, and the Brio is the one here that describes a transition.

What are roller shades, exactly?

One piece of cloth wound onto a tube, in a box at the top of the window, raised by rolling up. Nothing in the name commits the merchant to a fibre, a weight or a light level.

Is a zebra shade a roller shade?

It rolls on a tube and its own listing says so. Two Pages still sells it under zebra shades and keeps it out of the roller shade collection. Where a merchant files a product settles less than it looks.

Do roller shades block all the light?

Two of sixteen Two Pages listings publish 100%, under two different labels, and both figures are the brand’s. Neutral publishes that full blackout on the Tavi depends on picking the front valance.

How deep does the window need to be?

2 1/2 in on both Alvin Basic listings, 4 in for a flush fit. 2 7/8 in on the Brio, 3 5/8 in on the Tavi, and nothing published at all on the Rae.

Is a roller blind the same thing as a roller shade?

Here the two words point at one product. The Alvin Boutique Room Darkening carries a Roller Shades title in the roller shade collection, and opens with “these roller blinds offer the perfect balance of style, function, and comfort”.
