You have a folder of living rooms saved somewhere. Look past the paint and the sofa and ask what those photographs have in common: fabric running along a wall and stopping at a particular spot on it. Nothing in the picture tells you what is holding it up there, or how far that thing can reach.

That is the question a living room makes unavoidable. It is a room used in daylight, so its curtains are open for most of the hours anyone sits in it. What you look at, day after day, is not a drawn panel. It is two columns of gathered cloth standing somewhere on the wall with the window bare between them, and where they stand is decided by the rod or the track and by nothing else.

Plan the arrangement for the open position

Decide where the two columns of gathered fabric are going to stand on the wall when the curtains are open, mark those two spots, and let them set the width and the fixing points of the rod or track.

In a room lived in by day, the curtains are open for most of the hours anyone is in it, so the shape the room actually has is two vertical columns and a bare window between them. Planning from the closed position gets that backwards: it sizes the run to cover the glass and lets the open columns land wherever there is room, usually half on the glass. Placing the columns first fixes the only view of the curtains you see every day, and the closed position follows from it because a run wide enough to park the folds is always wide enough to cover the window.

The pattern in that column is arithmetic, not money. Two of those numbers buy the wall once, however wide it turns out to be: a rod set is one purchase, a finished track is one purchase. The other four multiply, quoted per finished panel and paid once for every panel the arrangement needs. The arrangement is yours to decide, not the listing’s.

It also decides what the room looks like. The arrangements that read as a wall of cloth rather than as two curtains are the ones that multiply, because a continuous run of fabric is simply more panels. That is how the same photograph lands at one panel price on a single window and at twelve times it across a room, with identical cloth in both. The fabric line is the one you are least likely to get wrong: printed, repeated on every colourway, easy to compare. The multiplier is the part nobody writes down.

Three of these listings are in the business of holding cloth up, and they solve it in ways with almost nothing in common.

The traverse track from Two Pages sells the carrier inside the panel price. Its page states that the kit includes the rod pieces, the carriers, the finials and the installation hardware, and that the delivered track length is tailored to the total finished width of the order. The geometry is published too: a projection of 3 1/2 in from the wall, a 1 in rod, carriers spaced every 2 1/8 in, and a ripple of about 4 to 4 1/4 in with the fullness built into the make-up.

One of those numbers separates an idea that works in a living room from one that does not. A projection of 3 1/2 in is the gap between the back of the cloth and the plaster. In a bedroom that is trivia. In a living room, where a sofa back, a radiator or a deep sill usually already occupies the wall under the window, it is the clearance you are buying, and it is the dimension no photograph will ever reveal.

The rod set from Half Price Drapes solves the same problem for $30.00, and is plain about what arrives: a telescoping rod, brackets, removable finials, screws and wall anchors. It extends from 52 to 144 in, and the price does not move with the width it is set to. It publishes no weight capacity and no bracket count, which matters because 144 in is twelve feet of span.

In the room

The motorised track is a different animal. Two Pages lists it from $205.99 to $317.89 by length and power type, with panels not included and the Zigbee gateway not included either. It publishes 110 lb of capacity and asks for 4 in of mounting clearance, 7 7/8 in for a double track. That clearance is not a recess depth. It is bare wall above the window, so the ceiling decides this idea before anything else does.

The listing that names a track and never describes it

Neutral Curtains sells the same arrangement at $98.99 per panel, identical across thirty-eight colourways, with the page stating that the total is the base price plus add-ons. The product is called Lily Linen Curtains and Drapes Ripple Fold with Track.

The page then describes the mechanism entirely through its hooks: roller hooks at 2 1/2 in spacing, fitted every eight grids. No track length, no track material, no kit contents, and nothing on whether the track sits inside that base price or waits in the add-ons. We are not saying the track is absent. We are saying the page does not print it, and that is a harder thing to shop with.

What it does publish is generous for this set: 350 gsm, a hem of 3 to 3.5 in, a stated tolerance of 0.4 in on the finished size. At 350 gsm, hung from hooks at 2 1/2 in centres, the panel has enough weight to fall in deep, regular folds rather than flare out between the fixings, so the wall of cloth in the photograph is the effect this product is built for. The cloth is not the problem. The component the arrangement depends on is the one with no numbers attached.

Two of them answer. The motorised track comes in three fixed lengths, 122 in, 200 3/4 in and 279 1/2 in, and the brand notes that the ordered length includes 4 in added by the hooks. The ready-made sheer answers with a single fixed width of 100 in, the choice moved to the drop. The other four print nothing about a maximum width, and none is being guessed at here.

Put a real opening underneath and the consequence is immediate. Take a 100 in run of window, an ordinary living room picture window. A telescoping rod pushed to its published 144 in limit leaves 22 in of plaster each side for the open columns to stand on, clear of the glass. One number is missing from all six pages, and it is the one that would close the argument. Not one publishes the width the panels occupy once pushed open. Neutral Curtains sells its sheer at $47.00 per panel, flat across eleven colourways, sold individually. Half Price Drapes sells a double layered sheer as a ready-made panel at $40.14 in the 84 in drop, in that same fixed 100 in width, and states an opacity of 20% sheer on the page.

Worth the twenty minutes

Count panels, not windows

Before pricing anything, write down the number of finished panels the arrangement needs across the whole room: two per window for a plain pair, four if a sheer goes behind, and one line per window even when the windows are on different walls.

Made-to-measure curtains are quoted per panel, so the arrangement is what multiplies the bill, not the fabric. A layered treatment on three windows is twelve panels, and it is still described in one sentence and shown in one photograph. Counting first turns an arrangement into a number you can compare against another arrangement, which is the comparison that actually decides what a room costs.

A handling step rather than a selling point. It works the same whatever label is sewn into the panel.

The two figures look alike and buy different quantities. One is a panel you specify, so a layered window is two sheers plus two heavy panels, and three windows dressed that way come to twelve. The other is a single wide panel that covers the opening on its own, so the same window takes one sheer and the count stops.

The made-to-order sheer hides a second trap in plain sight. Its published weight runs from 106 to 550 gsm by colourway, at the same $47.00, with no opacity figure published at all. A 106 gsm cloth and a 550 gsm cloth do not do the same thing to a south-facing room at midday: one veils the light, the other very nearly stops it. One line to read before you copy an idea

If that number is printed, the idea can be costed and, more usefully, pictured: where the open columns will stand, how much glass stays bare at midday, how many panels the room needs. If it is not printed, the idea is not yet an idea. It is a photograph, and no fabric underneath it will make it one. That holds whether the room is called a living room, a lounge or a sitting room; the only thing the name changes is how many windows are usually in it.
