Custom Window Treatments: What You Actually Pay For

Six custom window treatments from three brands, read on their own product pages in August 2026. Not to find the cheapest (that question cannot be answered honestly from these pages) but to work out what each posted number covers, and what the configurator adds to it.

The number on a custom window treatment listing is a floor, not a price

On most things you buy, the price on the page is the price of the thing. Made-to-measure window treatments do not work that way. On all six of these listings the figure shown is the price of the cheapest possible version of the product. On five of the six it is quoted before you have chosen a size; on three, before you have chosen a lining.

None of this is hidden. Neutral Curtains prints “Total Price = Base Price + Add-ons” on its product pages. Half Price Drapes puts a price calculator on its roman shade and will not produce a total until you enter a width and a length. Two Pages bills size and lining as configurator steps. The information is there. What is missing is any warning that the number you are reading is a floor, and that the three brands have arrived at their floors from three different places.

One more thing sits underneath all of it, and it is easy to miss. Neutral Curtains sells its velvet panels singly, with a handful of exceptions sold in pairs. Half Price Drapes marks its roman shade SOLD PER SHADE. Two Pages prices the Birkin as a single panel. So before any add-on is counted, check whether the figure in front of you covers one panel or two, because a window usually wants two.

What all three brands do the same way

First the shared model, because it explains why the prices behave as they do.

You supply the dimensions. On five of the six listings there is no finished size to pick off a shelf. You enter width and drop, and the item is made to it. That is the definition of the category, and it is why a base price cannot be a final price: the quantity of cloth is unknown when the number is published.

Lining is a step, not a property. On three of these six listings, opacity is something you select and pay for rather than something the cloth arrives with. Two Pages runs a Lining Type step on both its curtain and its shade. Half Price Drapes offers three lining choices on its French Linen roman shade (Privacy Lining, Lined & Interlined, and Blackout Lining) and states plainly that the shade’s opacity depends on which you pick.

The header or fold is a decision, not a default. Two Pages lists its Birkin velvet in Pleated, Soft Top and Grommet. Half Price Drapes offers its Signature Velvet with a pole pocket and hook belt, with back tabs, or with rings and drapery pins. What that choice costs is published on only one of these six products, and we come to it below.

Hooks come, hardware does not. Two Pages includes curtain hooks and states that rings and rods are not included. Neutral Curtains includes hooks, tells you to select rings according to your need, and says the rod is sold separately. A small line item on a page about large ones, and the easiest to miss. The Birkin velvet listing sets out its five configurator steps before it asks for anything.

Six listings, six different things being priced

Here is where the arithmetic breaks down for anyone trying to shop by price.

Two Pages Birkin Velvet Curtain, $89.00. A starting price for a single panel in base configuration. Size and lining are billed on top, through the configurator. All 37 colourways carry the same $89.00 and there is no strike-through price. Its published specifications also carry OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification, which is the sort of thing a base price quietly includes.
Two Pages Patti Deco Fold Roman Shade, $109.99. The listed price across nine colourways. Size, lift, motorisation and lining are configured and billed after.
Neutral Curtains Maillard Velvet, $65.99. A base price for a single panel, excluding add-ons, on a page that says so in as many words. The listing shows $69.00 struck through against $65.99: a gap of roughly four percent, which is a small real discount rather than a permanent badge.
Neutral Curtains Lily Linen Roman Shade, $35.99. The base price of the plain fold, and only the plain fold. More on that below, because it is the most misleading number on this page.
Half Price Drapes Signature Velvet Blackout, $92.94. Not a starting price at all. It is the price of one fixed size: 50 inches wide by 84 inches long, lining already included.

Read that list again and notice what it makes impossible. A configurator starting price with no size chosen, a fixed 50-inch panel, and a pre-calculation figure are three different kinds of number. Ranking them would produce a sentence like “the cheapest is $35.99,” which would be false in every way that matters.

Not like-for-like. These figures rest on different bases, so they cannot be ranked against each other. Read what each price covers before comparing.

We are not ranking these six prices, and neither should any page that shows them side by side. They do not rest on the same base. The only fair comparison is one you run yourself, in each configurator, at your own window size, with the same lining selected. The Maillard velvet page is the one that states the formula outright.

The ladder: what the configurator adds, and in what order

A made-to-measure price is better read as a staircase than as a number. The listing puts you on the bottom step. Each configurator step after that is a rung, and the brands publish the rungs even when they do not publish what each one costs.

Taking the steps these listings actually name, in the order they ask them:

Base price. The figure on the listing. Six listings here, six different bases.
Size. Width and length. On the Two Pages curtain and shade this is explicitly billed on top of the listed figure; on the Half Price Drapes roman shade the calculator will not return a total until you supply it.
Mount. Inside or outside, and on the Two Pages shade, an installation method step of its own.
Header or fold style. On the Two Pages curtain, pleated against soft top against grommet. On the Half Price Drapes shade, a design step choosing relaxed or flat fold. If the vocabulary is unfamiliar, header style is step two of every configurator and worth settling first.
Lining. A separate step on both Two Pages products and on the Half Price Drapes shade. This is the rung that carries opacity: Half Price Drapes states “90% Blackout Opacity” for its lined Signature Velvet panel, and attributes the darkness to the lining rather than to the velvet. None of these three listings publishes what the lining step costs, and lining is a paid step that moves the total as well as the opacity.
Lift and motorisation. The Two Pages shade asks for lift type, then power type, then remote controller type. The Half Price Drapes shade asks for a continuous loop and which side it hangs on.
Extended warranty. Offered after the shade is configured. Two Pages publishes the tiers: one year free, three years for $69, limited lifetime for $169.

No total here. Every rung is a step these brands publish, with the figure they publish for it. Where no figure is published we leave it blank rather than estimate one, and we do not add these up. Only the configurator can.

Two things about that staircase. The first: we do not know where it ends. No page here publishes a worked example, and estimating a total from a base price plus unpublished add-ons would be inventing a number. The second is that motorisation is not simply a rung: on the Two Pages shade it changes the product. The manual version is made from 18 to 84 inches wide and 24 to 72 inches long; the motorised version runs 27 to 96 inches wide and 18 to 98 inches long, on a deeper headrail. A window at the edge of one range may not be servable by the other. The hardware grows with it: Two Pages publishes a wooden headrail of 3/4 inch high by 1 1/2 inches deep on the manual shade, against 2 3/4 inches high by 3 1/2 inches deep on the motorised one. Motorisation is a rung on the price ladder and a change to what has to fit in the reveal.

Three ways to publish a starting price

All three brands sell made-to-order goods. All three publish a number that is not a total. What differs is how each one handles the gap, and the three approaches are worth recognising on sight.

Two Pages publishes two starting prices at once. On the Patti roman shade page, the header shows $109.99 and the foot of the configurator shows “Starting from $120”. Both are the brand’s own figures, on the same page, checked the same day. There is no way to tell from the page which one is the operative floor. Neither number is wrong in isolation, and a shopper reading only one of them will carry the wrong anchor into the configurator.

Neutral Curtains splits one shade into four listings. The Lily Linen roman shade at $35.99 is the plain fold. The relaxed fold is $39.99, the flat fold is $49.99, and the top-down bottom-up is $59.99: same fabric, four separate product pages, four base prices. So “from $35.99” is accurate for the range and misleading for your purchase, unless the plain fold happens to be the one you want. Worth noting alongside it: the fabric is 80% polyester and 20% linen despite the name, at 350 gsm. The plain fold listing is the one carrying the $35.99.

Half Price Drapes runs a fixed anchor against a moving price. The Crisp White French Linen roman shade carries a struck-through 448.00 while selling at $179.20. The anchor does not move. We have not been able to verify that $448.00 was ever a transacting price, and a permanent strike-through is merchandising rather than a discount, so it is not treated here as a reference point. The same pattern appears on the brand’s Signature Velvet curtain, where the struck-through figures run from $136.99 to $151.99 against selling prices of $80.82 to $107.91. The French Linen roman shade is the listing where the calculator, rather than the sticker, decides.

None of these three brands is lying. They are describing an unfinished price in three formats, and only one of the three states it as a formula the reader can act on: Neutral’s printed “Total Price = Base Price + Add-ons”.

The same brand sells both models

It is tempting to sort merchants into custom houses and ready-made shops. These listings do not support it. The calculator makes the split concrete: it works out the same window ready made and made to measure, side by side.

Half Price Drapes sells its Signature Velvet Blackout curtain in a single fixed width of 50 inches, in five drops (63, 84, 96, 108 and 120 inches) priced at $80.82, $92.94, $97.81, $103.59 and $107.91 respectively, with the blackout lining already on the panel. Pick a length, receive a finished curtain. That is ready-made, and its price is a real price.

The same brand sells its Crisp White French Linen roman shade as fully custom, handcrafted to your dimensions, with three lining choices and a calculator that runs on width times length.

So the question is not which brand does custom. A merchant selling custom curtains and drapes will happily sell you a fixed-size panel from the next collection along, which is why the choice is made per product, not per brand. The question is which model the specific product uses, and that has to be asked product by product, on the page in front of you.

The window rules before the budget does

Some of these choices are settled by the frame before money enters the conversation, and they are cheap to check first: measure the reveal before you choose anything.

Depth. An inside-mounted Two Pages roman shade requires a minimum window depth of 2 3/8 inches. Half Price Drapes requires at least 2 3/4 inches for an inside mount on its roman shades. A shallow reveal narrows the field faster than a budget does.

Measure the reveal before choosing a fabric. A shallow frame rules options out faster than a budget does.

Rod diameter. The pole pocket on the Half Price Drapes Signature Velvet accommodates a pole up to 1 1/2 inches in diameter. If you already own a heavier rod, that panel is out on hardware grounds, whatever it costs.

Tolerance. Made-to-measure does not mean made-to-the-millimetre, and two of these brands say so on the page. Two Pages states that lengths vary by 1 inch because the panels are handcrafted. Neutral Curtains states a 0.4 inch tolerance on the finished size, due to manual measurement. Half Price Drapes does not publish a tolerance on these listings. If you are working to a hem that has to clear a radiator or kiss a floor, an inch of published variance is a design input, not a footnote.

Stack and clearance. A raised roman shade does not disappear. Neutral Curtains publishes a stack height of 7 to 10 inches on the Lily when it is up. Two Pages notes that the deco fold on the Patti can sit proud of the frame on an inside mount. Both are things you measure for, not things you discover.

Fabric width. The Two Pages Birkin velvet is woven 110 inches wide, which is what allows a wide panel to be made without a seam. It is the one figure of its kind on these six pages, and it is worth having: a fabric narrower than your window means a seam, whoever makes the curtain.

What none of these listings tell you

The honest part of a comparison is the part that runs out of data.

Half Price Drapes does not publish a fabric weight for either of the products here, so there is no gram weight to set against the 300 gsm of the Two Pages Birkin, the 285 gsm of the Neutral Maillard, the 350 gsm of the Lily, or the 248 gsm of the Patti. We are not estimating one. Two Pages publishes no opacity figure for the Patti shade at all, and describes the Birkin only as effective at light blocking, without a percentage. Half Price Drapes does not publish a size range for its roman shade, so the page does not tell you in advance whether your window is within it.

What these listings do not tell you

Missing from the product page, so missing here too. A brand that prints the number is doing you a favour worth counting.

And a gap on our side, which matters more than any of those on a page about what you pay. We have not verified lead times, return policies, or shipping costs for any of these three brands. On a made-to-order purchase those are three of the most consequential terms, and we are not going to describe them from memory or from a competitor’s summary. Until they are checked on each brand’s own pages, this page says nothing about them, and you should ask before you order.

The one question to ask before you order

It all collapses into one request, and it works on any made-to-measure listing:

“Give me the total for my exact width and drop, with the lining and header I want, and tell me what hardware is not in that figure.”

Ask it of the configurator by building the order to the cart before you compare anything, and of a salesperson in the same words if there is one.

The answer reveals more than the number does. If the total arrives quickly and itemised, the base price you were shown was a fair signal. If it lands well above the listing, you have learned where that brand keeps its margin: in the lining, in the fold, in the drop. And if a brand cannot give you a total until you have committed to something, that is worth knowing before you commit.

One number on a listing cannot be compared to another number on another listing. Two totals, built at your own window size with the same lining selected, can be.

Questions people ask before ordering

Is the price I see on a custom curtain the price I pay?

On five of these six listings, no. Neutral Curtains writes the rule on the page: “Total Price = Base Price + Add-ons”. Two Pages bills size and lining through the configurator. Half Price Drapes will not return a total on its roman shade until you have entered a width and a length. The exception is the Half Price Drapes Signature Velvet curtain, which is sold in fixed sizes at a firm price.

Why do two roman shades in the same fabric cost different amounts at the same brand?

Because at Neutral Curtains the fold style is a separate listing rather than an option. The Lily Linen shade is $35.99 in plain fold, $39.99 relaxed, $49.99 flat fold and $59.99 top-down bottom-up: same cloth, four product pages, four base prices.

Do custom made curtains come with the rod and rings?

Not on these listings. Two Pages includes curtain hooks and states that rings and rods are not included. Neutral Curtains includes hooks, asks you to choose rings to suit, and sells the rod separately. On the Half Price Drapes Signature Velvet, the pole pocket takes a pole up to 1 1/2 inches in diameter, which you buy elsewhere.

How exact is “made to measure”?

Two Pages publishes a length variance of 1 inch, attributed to handcrafting. Neutral Curtains publishes a 0.4 inch tolerance on the finished size, attributed to manual measurement. Half Price Drapes does not publish a tolerance on these listings, and we are not inferring one.

Will a custom shade fit a shallow window frame?

An inside-mounted Two Pages roman shade needs a minimum depth of 2 3/8 inches; Half Price Drapes asks for at least 2 3/4 inches. Neutral Curtains publishes 2 1/2 inches as a recommended minimum for a motorised inside mount only, and does not publish a manual minimum, so those three figures are not measuring the same thing, and should not be read as a ranking.
