Bay Window Treatments: What Actually Turns the Corner

A bay window is three windows and two corners pretending to be one opening. That is the whole problem, and almost nothing sold for it says so out loud.

One listing does. Two Pages sells a rod whose name is Cato Bay Window Curtain Traverse Rod, and near the bottom of the same page, under the tips, it says that the gliders cannot pass through the corner section, that each rod segment works on its own, and that a bay window therefore needs a minimum of three panels. The product named for the bay does not make a bay curtain. It makes three curtains that meet at two corners.

Read that once and the question changes shape. Bay window treatments stop being a matter of style, curtains against shades, and become a matter of geometry: where does the fabric go when it is open, and what can you screw into. Four real answers follow, from three brands, and not one of the six listings behind them describes a bay window at all.

The Rod Named for Bay Windows Cannot Draw a Curtain Around One

The Cato is a proper piece of hardware. Aluminium rod sections joined by zinc alloy corner connectors, made to the angle of your bay, brackets and gliders and finials and screws in the box, 189.90 dollars across all three finishes. Two Pages shows no anchor price against it, which is worth saying plainly: there is no strike-through to relay and no discount to report.

What it cannot do is carry a glider round a corner. Each segment draws independently, so the centre panel opens by gathering toward one end of the centre segment, and the left and right panels gather toward their own outer ends. Three panels, three parking spaces.

Here is what that costs inside a bay. On a flat wall an open curtain gathers onto plaster beside the window and gives the whole opening back. A bay has glass on three sides, so the only wall left is the few inches at each inside corner, which is also where the next panel starts: the gathered fabric of one and the leading edge of the next end up in the same place. The centre panel, the widest of the three, has the furthest to travel and the least room to arrive in. Whatever will not fit into the corner sits on the glass, all day.

A measure worth keeping

Plan where each panel parks before you choose the hardware. A bay gives you almost no flat wall beside its glass, so an open panel either gathers into the inside corner or sits on the window.

On a flat wall a panel opens onto plaster and gives the whole window back. A bay has glass on three sides and the only wall left is the few inches at each inside corner, which is also where the next panel starts. Fabric that has nowhere to go stays on the glass all day, and it is the widest panel, the centre one, that loses the most. Deciding the parking place first is what tells you whether you want a corner that splits the run into separate panels, a curved run that carries everything to one end, or no run at all and a shade in each opening.

That is not a fault in the rod, it is what a corner connector costs, and the brand prints it. But it moves the first decision away from fabric: which end does each of three panels park at, and can you live with where that leaves the middle one.

Six Listings, and Not One of Them Describes a Bay

Everything these pages publish is about parts, not about shapes.

The Cato lists its kit contents, its bracket size, six finial lengths, 3 5/8 inches of wall projection and a maximum unsupported span of 59 inches across the connector. The Velin bendable track lists what arrives in the box down to two magnetic centre locks once the track passes 59 inches, and a second rail with a connector past 97.

What none of them lists is a bay. No range of acceptable angles, no minimum or maximum rod length, no standard bay dimension, and no price by length even though the Cato is built to your configuration. Half Price Drapes sells no corner connector at all: its whole hardware catalogue is eighteen listings, fourteen of them straight rod sets, checked one by one. Neutral Curtains sells four pieces of hardware, not one a rod and not one a track, while listing a curtain called Ripple Fold with Track whose page never describes the track.

and a bay can pass all three and still be untreatable. So you cannot ask any of these pages whether they fit your bay. You can only ask whether they fit your narrowest opening, and exactly one of the six answers that: the Tavi roller shade publishes 21 to 80 inches of width. Which is why a bay gets measured as three windows and two corners, never as one width.

Two Answers From the Same Brand, and They Do Not Fix Into the Same Surface

Two Pages sells a second answer to the same window, and it is the opposite of the first in almost every respect.

The Cato is wall mount only, 3 5/8 inches of projection, rated at 55 to 77 pounds depending on the application, with a bracket close to each side of every corner connector. The Velin Bendable Single Ceiling Curtain Track is ceiling mount only, aluminium, 89.99 dollars, and it bends. The page is careful about how far: it achieves a 90 degree turn, but the corner comes out as a smooth curve rather than a sharp right angle. Its runners travel the whole length, so there is no minimum number of panels. One curtain can go round the bay.

The two listings

They are not interchangeable, because what decides is what sits above the bay. A projection often runs under a soffit, a boxed roller shutter or a sloping eave, and where there is nothing solid to fix into overhead the bendable track is out before anyone discusses fabric.

Load settles the rest, and a bay makes unavoidable the part of

what a rod has to carry, and what the bracket does about it

that a flat wall lets you ignore. The Velin publishes 22 pounds up to 51 inches of track, 33 up to 59, 44 up to 78 and 55 up to 90, and then the figures stop, even though the same table runs bracket counts to 216 inches. Past 90 inches there is nothing in print to extrapolate from. A lined pair of heavy panels across three sides of a bay is exactly the case that runs past both numbers, and exactly the case the wall mounted rod is rated for.

The curve is not free either. A rail that turns in an arc rather than an angle holds the curtain a few inches off the glass through the turn, which reads as a soft sweep from inside and as a corner that never quite closes from the street.

The Same Bay, Measured Two Completely Different Ways

The two mechanisms do not even ask you to measure the same way, and neither protocol is the one in how a window gets measured before anything is ordered. For the Cato, Two Pages wants the width of each wall section with finials included, plus a chord at each inside corner: mark 24 inches along both walls, then measure straight between the marks. For the Velin it wants the real path taken with a flexible tape, plus 5 inches. One describes an angle without a protractor, the other a curve. Take both while you are up the ladder and you can still change your mind.

Worth doing

Measure a bay as three windows, then measure the two corners

Write down the width and drop of each opening separately, left, centre and right, then treat each inside corner as its own measurement: mark a point the same distance along both walls from the corner and measure straight between the two marks.

Nothing about a bay is symmetrical by default, and the two side openings are usually narrower than the centre one, which decides what can be ordered at all. The corner is the part no tape measure reads directly: the distance between two marks set the same distance from the corner describes the angle without anybody needing a protractor, and it is the figure hardware made to a bay is calculated from. Taking it at the start also tells you early whether the two corners are the same angle, which they often are not.

Five Names for Bay Window Treatments, and What Each One Turns Out to Be

The vocabulary sorts this category better than the price does, provided you read each name against its own page. Bay Window Curtain Traverse Rod means straight segments at measured angles, gliders that stop at each joint, three panels minimum. Bendable Ceiling Curtain Track means a continuous rail that curves to 90 degrees and never makes a true corner, fixed overhead and nowhere else. Extendable Metal Rod Set means telescoping and straight, with no corner capability published anywhere. Ripple Fold with Track means a panel from a brand that sells no track. French Linen Roman Shade means one piece per opening, so three separate orders.

Each name commits you to a different morning: three curtains drawn one at a time, one curtain that sweeps the whole bay, one flat curtain pulled across the front of it, or three shades that never move sideways at all. Choose the gesture first and the shortlist writes itself.

No brand here is being dishonest. Two Pages prints the glider limitation and prints the curve limitation, both against its own sales argument. It is reading the name without the page under it that misleads.

The Cheapest Way Across a Bay Is Also the One That Removes It

The Half Price Drapes Glass Sphere set is a telescoping rod, one inch in diameter, expanding from 52 to 144 inches, supplied with brackets, removable finials, screws and wall anchors. It was 30.00 dollars on 12 September 2026. Three weeks earlier the same listing was 52.49, and across both readings the struck-through figure beside it never moved off 74.99. An anchor that holds still while the real price falls by 22 dollars is not a former price, and this page will not repeat it as a saving.

In the room

Thirty dollars buys the only route that needs no corner at all: fix it wall to wall across the mouth of the bay and hang a pair of panels in front of the whole projection. It also deletes the bay. The seat, the sill and the depth end up behind the curtain, and closing it shuts them out of the room. Daylight loses the three angles it was arriving from and comes in flat, through one plane, like an ordinary window with an unusually deep sill.

There is a real case for that. Facing a street lamp or a low morning sun, in a room for sleeping, it is the most effective thing you can do and the cheapest. As a default it treats the best feature of the room as a problem to be covered.

Where this usually goes wrong

Read those three figures as what each one buys, not as a ranking: a finished kit, a rod cut to your configuration and a track sold by length are not the same object.

One caution on the hardware. Half Price Drapes publishes no weight capacity for this set, no bracket count and no centre support, while selling it at spans up to 144 inches. A one inch rod carrying lined panels over twelve feet on end brackets alone will show you where its middle is, which makes it a question of

fixing a bracket into something that will hold

before it is a question of rods.

One Treatment per Opening, and the Deductions Come Three Times

The other honest answer is to stop going round the corner and fit something inside each opening.

In the room

Neutral Curtains builds a Tavi roller shade from 21 to 80 inches wide and 20 to 119 long in eighths of an inch, 42.99 dollars as a floor, and asks 3 5/8 inches of depth for an inside mount. Its factory takes 3/8 of an inch off the width you order, off the headrail rather than the fabric, and says outright that this leaves gaps at the sides, which is

what a roller shade deducts from the width you measured. Half Price Drapes makes a French linen roman shade, 100 percent linen, lined to whichever of

On one window, a 3/8 inch deduction means a sliver of light down each edge. On a bay it means six, and they are not spread around a room: they sit on three planes angled toward each other, at eye level, so light past the right hand shade lands on the left hand gap. The compromise you accepted once is multiplied by three and then pointed at itself.

Depth decides before fabric does, and bay sashes are often set in a shallow frame, so 3 5/8 inches is a real bar to clear. The roman asks nearly an inch less, but nothing on its page tells you whether your narrowest opening is orderable at all. Only one of the two can be ruled out before you fall for a fabric.

Nobody Publishes Where the Fabric Goes When the Curtain Is Open

Across all six listings, not one publishes a stack back: the width a panel occupies once it is out of the way. The Velin does not publish how far it hangs below the ceiling. The Cato publishes neither a length range nor the angles it accepts. Half Price Drapes publishes no load. Neutral Curtains publishes no track.

What Neutral does publish is the panel itself: 350 gsm, 80 percent polyester and 20 percent linen, a 3 to 3.5 inch bottom hem, from 98.99 dollars per panel before add ons. That weight is the good news and the problem in one figure. At 350 gsm a panel holds a deep, regular fold instead of flaring, which is what you want hanging against three angled planes of glass. But fabric that keeps its fold when closed keeps its volume when open, and in a bay that volume has nowhere to sit except the corner and the glass beside it.

Three Bays, Three Answers

There is no winner, because the three constraints this page has worked through belong to your room and not to the products.

Solid ceiling above the bay, panels light to medium: take the bendable track. One curtain, the whole sweep, no corner joints. Accept that the turn is a curve and not an angle, and keep the finished weight inside the figures the brand actually prints.

If there is nothing to fix into overhead, or the panels are heavy and lined, take the corner rod. Three panels is the price of admission, so spend ten minutes deciding which way each one opens before you order, and remember that a bracket is needed on both sides of every corner with no more than 59 inches unsupported across it.

If the projection holds a window seat, a radiator or a deep sill, or if you rent, fit one treatment per opening and check your shallowest reveal before you look at a single colour. Then, where there is flat wall either side of the recess, hang a pair of long panels out there that never actually close. The short pieces do the light, the long ones frame the bay as one feature instead of three, and they have somewhere to stack.

Worth considering instead

Stop at the sill inside the bay, go to the floor outside it

Fit short treatments inside the bay, sill length or shades in each opening, and hang a pair of full length panels on the flat wall outside the recess that never actually close.

It solves the two problems a bay creates at once. Inside the recess there is usually a seat, a radiator or a deep sill, so floor length fabric has nowhere to fall and ends up bunched on the ledge; short treatments sit clear of all of it and still do the light and the privacy. Outside the recess there is real wall, so the long panels have somewhere to stack, and they frame the whole bay as one feature instead of three. The short pieces can be the cheap, practical part of the budget and the long ones can be the fabric you actually wanted.

An arrangement, not a recommendation to buy anything. It works with whatever you already own.

Whichever you pick, do it in this order. With the corner rod, buy the rod before the curtains: Two Pages works out the exact length of each section only once the order is placed, and says on the page to contact them if you want those lengths in order to size your curtains. Three panels cut to sections whose length nobody has told you is not a mistake a hem will fix.

Bay Window Treatments: Common Questions

Do I need three separate curtains on a bay window?

With the Cato corner rod from Two Pages, yes. Its page states that the gliders cannot pass through the corner section, that each rod segment works independently, and that a bay window therefore needs a minimum of three panels, two on an L shaped corner window. With the Velin bendable track from the same brand, no: the rail is continuous through the curve and the page sets no minimum number of panels.

Can a curtain rod actually bend around a bay?

Two different mechanisms, worth keeping apart. The Cato does not bend. It joins straight aluminium sections with zinc alloy corner connectors made to the angle you measured. Will the brand tell me how long each section of the rod is?
