Curtains vs Blinds: Which Belongs on Which Window

Across the three merchants behind this page, exactly one listing is a blind in the sense most people mean: horizontal slats on a headrail that tilt and lift.

Half Price Drapes, whose name carries the word Drapes, sells no blind at all. Its own site search for “blinds” returns roman shades, and the word does not appear once on its home page. Neutral Curtains titles its woven bamboo panels Blinds & Shades and its roman shades Roman Shades & Blinds, and a search there for “venetian” turns up neither a venetian nor a slat. Two Pages has that venetian, and a hardwood shutter whose louvers also tilt, and it files its cellular and zebra shades under collections called Zebra Blinds and Day Night Blinds, where nothing tilts at all.

So curtains vs blinds, put that way, is rarely the comparison anyone is actually making. The one worth making has nothing to do with style. A blind and a curtain are two opposite ways of turning a single measurement into a product. One is ordered by subtraction, the other by multiplication. That difference decides which of the two your window can take, how much daylight you still see at its edges once it is up, and how much of the glass you get back when you open it.

Six prices, and not one of them is priced on the same thing

The six listings read here start at $29.99 for an aluminium venetian blind, $107.99 for a hardwood plantation shutter, $149.99 per panel for a woven wood panel track, $65.00 for the cheapest of six bamboo collections, $85.99 for a pleated cotton blend curtain panel, and $86.50 for a ready made blackout panel in its shortest drop.

They cannot be ranked, and the reason is the subject of this page. The first three are configurator floors: nothing exists yet, and the width and length you type in are what gets made. The bamboo figure is a base price on a listing that states its own rule, Total Price = Base Price + Add-ons, and the same is true of the pleated panel. The last one is a finished object in a box.

Read that way, the cheapest number on the list is the most demanding. The $29.99 buys a mechanism that will be cut to your window and will fit no other. The $86.50 buys 100 inches of finished cloth that has never heard of your window and does not need to. One price is for something that has to go in. The other is for something that has to hang. Which of the two the words on a listing are describing is worth settling first.

A blind is ordered by subtraction, and the merchants publish the subtraction

Look at how each of these listings tells you to measure the window.

For the venetian blind: “The order width should equal your window casing width minus 1/4 inch.” For the bamboo shade: “We automatically make a 3/8″ deduction from your measured width for a proper fit.” For the shutter: “The finished shutter width is typically 1/2″ narrower than your ordered width.” For the panel track: order width equals window width minus 1/2 inch, order height equals window height minus 1 1/2 inches.

3 of these 4 listings publish a width deduction, and 2 publish a variance on the finished size. The two are separate numbers and they run in the same direction. Nothing here is averaged, totalled or borrowed from a neighbouring listing.

Four listings, four subtractions, all published in advance. Two of them go further and tell you what is left over. Two Pages writes that “slight side gaps may occur due to the headrail deduction” on the venetian, and recommends an outside mount with 2 to 4 inches of extra width to reduce them. The panel track listing says there may be “approximately 1″ gaps at the left and right edges”, and that the product “is not designed as a blackout solution”.

That strip of daylight down the side of a blind is not a botched installation. It is the deduction, announced before you ordered. A quarter inch off the width does not sound like much, but it is clearance at the edges of the reveal, and on a south facing window it shows at midday as a line of daylight down the side of the blind. Tilting the slats will not close it, because the gap is beside them rather than between them. The remedy in the listing is arithmetic rather than hardware: stop subtracting, mount outside the frame, add two to four inches. Which is exactly what a curtain does by default.

One more number stacks on top. Neutral publishes a manufacturing tolerance of 0.4 inch on its bamboo shades alongside the 3/8 inch deduction, and the two run the same way: the deduction is intended and the tolerance is not, and neither gives width back. It is also the only listing here that will waive its deduction, on a written note left with the order.

What the window has to give before it gives anything back

A curtain asks nothing of a window. A blind asks first, and the requirements are published.

Minimum depth for an inside mount is 3 inches on the venetian, 3 1/8 inches on the panel track, which mounts to the ceiling and nowhere else, and 1 3/4 inches on the shutter, which is sold for inside mounting only. Neutral does not publish a minimum depth for its bamboo shades at all. The shutter adds a condition on the opening rather than on the product: the two diagonals must be within 1/2 inch of each other, which is a request for a window that is actually square.

Then there is the room the mechanism keeps for itself. Neutral states a minimum stack height of 7 inches on a bamboo shade when it is fully raised. On a 48 inch window that is a seventh of the view gone for good, including on the morning you wanted the glass wide open. The panel track publishes its own version: on a track that runs from 24 to 102 inches, the stacked panels occupy between 10 1/2 and 36 1/2 inches with three panels. At the wide end that is more than a third of a patio door standing permanently to one side, and which side is a choice you make at checkout.

In the room

Raised, a shade parks across the top of the glass rather than beside it. The window reads as shorter than it is for as long as the shade is up, and the daylight that does get in arrives lower down the wall. A curtain does the opposite with the same movement: it stacks on the wall, not on the glass, so every inch of rod you ran past the frame is an inch of window handed back.

None of that is a defect. It is the price of a mechanism that lives inside the opening. But it does reverse the usual order of shopping: a reveal two inches deep rules out three of the four blinds here before anyone has mentioned fabric, colour or budget.

A curtain is ordered by multiplication, and it wants wall rather than window

The two listings

On the curtain side, the only number that governs the order is a coefficient.

Neutral is the one listing of the six to publish one: “For better-looking curtains, we recommend choosing 1.2x-2x times the final measured width.” Nothing is taken off. The finished width is larger than the opening by design, and the surplus is the product, because the surplus is what becomes the fold. Multiply by 1.2 and you get panels that dress a window. Multiply by 2 and you get panels that close over it. The cloth is identical; the arithmetic is the entire difference.

The proportion to work to

Inside or outside the reveal

Inside keeps the frame visible and leaks light at the sides. Outside covers the frame, needs two to four inches of overlap per side, and reads larger.

This is a proportion decision disguised as a fitting decision. An inside mount keeps a handsome frame on show and accepts a strip of daylight down each edge. An outside mount gives a clean rectangle that makes a small or awkward window look bigger, and it is the only one of the two that gets close to a dark room.

And because all of it hangs from a rod screwed to the wall, the window stops being a constraint. A two inch reveal, a frame out of square by half an inch, a tiled sill: none of them change the order. What the panel needs instead is wall, on both sides and above, and a rod, which neither of these two listings includes. Hooks come with the pleated panel. Rings are chosen separately and the rod is sold separately, and that is worth budgeting before the fabric is chosen.

In the room

Half Price Drapes answers a wide window a third way, which is neither subtraction nor multiplication. Its extra wide panel is 100 inches, and only 100 inches, in four drops from 84 to 120 inches, with no width option anywhere on the page. Coverage is bought in whole blocks: one panel, or two, and nothing in between. Put that against the only ratio published here and the blocks land awkwardly. One panel on a 90 inch opening is 1.1 times the width, under the 1.2x floor Neutral recommends. Two panels on the same window is 2.2 times, over the top of the range. The panel is well made and the arithmetic is simply not yours to set.

Curtains vs blinds is usually curtains vs shades

What the catalogues do with this vocabulary is worth saying plainly.

It is not only that two of the three merchants sell no slat. On the venetian itself, the title says Venetian Blinds while the address of the same page says aluminum-blinds, and the same merchant files its cellular and zebra shades under two further collections named after blinds.

In the room

The consequence for a buyer is concrete. Comparing curtains and blinds on these sites usually means comparing cloth that gathers with cloth that stacks, a real choice but a different one, and the shades and blinds shelf is where it belongs. Tilting louvers, the one thing a blind does that a curtain never will, sit on two of these six listings, and one of the two is a fixed hardwood shutter that only mounts inside the frame. If what you pictured was angling slats to keep the view and lose the glare, that function is much rarer on these shelves than the word suggests.

Measure the reveal before you choose a material

One check settles the question, and it takes a tape measure rather than a catalogue.

Measure the depth of the reveal, then lay a straight edge across the opening and compare the two diagonals. If the window gives you three inches of depth and something close to a square, a blind is eligible, and you buy it by subtraction: expect a published deduction, expect a tolerance on top, and ask where the stack sits when it is fully raised. If it does not, the remaining options are textile, and you buy them by multiplication: pick a ratio between 1.2 and 2 depending on whether the panels are there to dress the window or to close it, and find the wall to park them on.

Both can be true on the same window, and that is often the cheapest good outcome. A plain shade inside the reveal handles the glare at the glass. Panels hung above the frame and wide of it set the proportion of the wall, never actually close, and can therefore be the fabric you wanted rather than the one that had to be opaque.

Worth considering instead

A shade for the light, panels for the room

Fit a plain shade inside the reveal for light control, and hang decorative panels outside the frame that never actually close.

It separates the two jobs a window treatment is asked to do, and each one gets to be good at its own. The shade does the darkness and can be cheap and plain; the panels do the proportion and the softness and can be the fabric you actually wanted. It is also how you get a dark room without buying dark curtains.

An arrangement, not a recommendation to buy anything. It works with whatever you already own.

Questions people ask before deciding

Are blinds cheaper than curtains? Six prices, six bases: three configurator floors, two base prices that exclude add-ons, one finished panel in a fixed width. They cannot be ranked. The lowest figure is a blind, at $29.99, but it is the floor of a made to order mechanism.

How much window depth do you need for an inside mount blind? Three inches for the aluminium venetian, 3 1/8 for the panel track, 1 3/4 for the plantation shutter. Neutral Curtains publishes no minimum depth for its bamboo shades, so that one has to be asked before ordering.

Why is there a strip of light down the side of my blind? Because the width was reduced before the shade was made: a 1/4 inch headrail deduction on the venetian, an automatic 3/8 inch on the bamboo, about 1/2 inch on the shutter, plus a 0.4 inch tolerance at Neutral. Two listings say outright that side gaps may remain.

How much wider than the window should curtains be? Neutral Curtains is the only one of the six to publish a figure: 1.2x to 2x the final measured width. The low end dresses a window it will never close, the high end is what a curtain you actually draw needs.

Can you use a blind and curtains on the same window? Yes, and the arithmetic is what makes it work: the shade by subtraction inside the reveal for the light, the panels by multiplication outside the frame for the proportion.
