Modern isn’t a fabric you buy, it’s a line you set
Look at a window that reads modern and you are really looking at a line: a clean, continuous run of fabric with hardware you do not notice. Look at one that reads dated and the line is broken, the fabric stops short, and the mechanics are the first thing you see.
Three decisions set that line, and you make all three before the fabric matters. The first is how high and how wide you mount, because the eye reads the top of the treatment as the top of the window. The second is how far it runs, floor to ceiling or wall to wall rather than stopping at the frame. The third is how much hardware shows, because modern hides its mechanism. You are paying for the track, not the cloth
Here is where the modern read gets a price tag, and it is not on the fabric. Two Pages sells a ripple fold drapery that comes with its traverse track in the listed price, the only curtain in this set whose opening system is included rather than sold on top. On that listing the Liz fabric is $119.99. The same Liz fabric, as a plain custom curtain on the same merchant’s sliding-door page, is $59.99, under the same SKU. The gap is the track.
Neutral Curtains names the feature in its title, “Lily Linen Curtains & Drapes Ripple Fold with Track,” and then never describes the track anywhere on the page: not its length, not its material, not whether it is in the base price or the add-ons. The modern part is in the name and missing from the spec.

So the prices do not line up, and the brands do not intend them to. One number includes a track, one is a base price before add-ons, two are configurator floors. Ranking them tells you nothing. What they share is the shape of the bill: the fabric is the cheap part, and the modern hardware is the line item you actually chose.
The fabric name will not even hold still. Neutral calls the Lily cloth 80% polyester and 20% linen; Two Pages, using the same colour codes on the same fabric family, calls it 10% linen and 90% polyester. Two merchants, one cloth, two published compositions. If the composition on the label is not stable, it is a poor thing to shop on, and a poorer thing to pay a premium for.

The cleanest modern window has no cords and no chains hanging off it, and that is a choice you make at the mechanism, not the fabric counter. Cordless and motorised lifts are the whole point: nothing dangles, nothing frames the glass, the surface reads flat.

The catch is where that lands on the bill, and it is the mirror image of the curtain. Two Pages lists the motorised Alvin from $43.79, below the $49.89 floor of the corded version of the same Boutique fabric, because the listed price does not include the motor. The lift is a paid configurator option charged on top, and the same page prices it two ways, $153.99 under its current options and $138.99 under an older block, so the one number to take from it is that the sticker is not the price of a motorised shade. Two Pages describes the blackout as “complete light blockage” and publishes no percentage, which is a claim, not a measurement.
Operation also quietly decides how dark the room gets. Neutral is unusually honest about it on the Tavi roller: for full blackout you have to add the front valance, because the back valance leaves a gap at the sides where the headrail sits. The darkness is a finish you select, not a property of the cloth, which is why a single opacity figure on a shade listing rarely means what a shopper thinks it means.

The three decisions give the same answer everywhere, but the room decides which one you are allowed to turn. Three common cases:
