One of These “Sheer” Panels Weighs 550 Grams. It Is Not Sheer
Neutral’s Aura Sheer is a single listing with eleven colours and one price, $47. Read the fabric line colour by colour and the “sheer” comes apart. The lightest colour, Phantom Yarn, is a 100% polyester cloth at 106 gsm. The three heaviest colours are an 80% cotton, 20% silk blend at 550 gsm. That is more than five times the weight, under one product name, for the same money.
A 106 gsm polyester voile and a 550 gsm cotton panel do opposite things to a window. The light voile fills the room with soft, even daylight and gives a hazy privacy while the sun is up. The 550 gsm panel is heavy enough to read as a daytime privacy drape that holds most of the light out, closer to a light curtain than to anything you would call sheer. Picking the wrong colour here does not change the shade, it changes what the window does.

What Every Real Sheer Is Doing: Filtering Light, Not Blocking It
Under the naming, the five panels share one job. Each is a single, unlined layer with no backing, hung to soften daylight and to give privacy while it is brighter outside than in. Half Price Drapes is the only brand here that puts a number on it: it describes its Double Layered panel as “unlined without backing” at 20% sheer opacity. That figure is Half Price Drapes’ own claim, not a measurement taken here, and no standard defines what “20%” has to mean.
Left on its own, that number is inventory. What it actually tells you is narrow and useful: a panel the brand rates at 20% opacity passes a lot of light and a lot of silhouette, which is the point of a sheer and the reason none of these will cover you after dark. Once it is darker outside than in, a single unlined layer shows the room to the street, whatever the panel weighs.
That is why a sheer is a daytime tool, and why the honest answer to night privacy is a second layer: a blind or a lined curtain that actually closes, with the sheer left to handle the day. A shade for the light, panels for the room
Fit a plain shade inside the reveal for light control, and hang decorative panels outside the frame that never actually close.
It separates the two jobs a window treatment is asked to do, and each one gets to be good at its own. The shade does the darkness and can be cheap and plain; the panels do the proportion and the softness and can be the fabric you actually wanted. It is also how you get a dark room without buying dark curtains.

Where They Split: Polyester Voile Against Linen Sheer
The first real fork is fibre. Two of these are polyester, two are linen, and one is both depending on the colour. Two Pages’ Scandina is 100% polyester. Half Price Drapes calls its panel a voile and names polyester only in the product web address, not in the spec, so the fibre is something the brand does not actually publish on the page. Against them sit two linens: Two Pages’ Joy is 100% European flax linen, certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100, and Neutral’s Meadow is 100% European linen.
Fibre changes the grain of the light before weight does. A polyester voile diffuses daylight evenly and a little glossily, and it holds a crisp pleat because the yarn springs back. Linen diffuses unevenly and matte, with slubs that catch the light and a warmth polyester does not have, and it relaxes and creases as it hangs. One reads as clean and modern, the other as soft and textured, from the same distance and the same window.
There is a cost to the linen look that belongs in the decision rather than in a surprise later. Linen wrinkles, and a sheer linen wrinkles where you see it, because the light comes straight through the cloth instead of bouncing off it.

Weight Is the Number That Predicts the Light. Read It, Not the Name

Only One of the Five Publishes an Opacity Figure, and It Is a Brand Claim
The gaps in these listings are not random, and they are not neutral. Half Price Drapes publishes an opacity figure and no fabric weight. The other four publish a fabric weight and no opacity figure. Each brand prints one half of the thing you need and leaves the other half blank.
That is why weight, not opacity, is the comparison that works. Half Price Drapes’ 20% is a real number, but it is the only one, so there is nothing on the other four panels to hold it against. The four weights sit on one scale you can read across brands. When a listing gives you the opacity and hides the weight, it hands you the figure that does not travel and keeps the one that does.
There is a second blank worth naming. On Scandina and Aura, the per-colour weight is buried in the body text, not attached to the colour you click. The figure exists, and the brand still lets you pick a colour without ever showing that you have changed the fabric weight along with the shade. Neither brand is hiding the number, exactly. The prices look like a ranking and are not one. They come from three different ways of selling a panel.
Half Price Drapes sells a ready-made panel at a fixed 100 inch width, priced by length, from $42.33 at 84 inches to $51.02 at 120 inches. That figure sits under a standing markdown, a “compare at” of $72.99 to $80.99 printed on every length. It is permanent merchandising, not a sale, so the price is $42.33 and not a saving. Two Pages and Neutral do the opposite. They quote a made-to-order base panel, and the size you need is added on top in the configurator. If what you actually want is privacy, and “sheer” was just the aisle you searched, the heavier Aura colours will do it, at 330 to 550 gsm. Buy them knowing you are buying a light drape and not a voile, and that the word on the listing is the least reliable thing on it. That is the rule worth leaving with: on a sheer, read the weight in grams before you read the name, because the name is the one spec on the page that no one has to earn.
One more thing that decides how a sheer looks, whatever its weight, is how much fabric you order for the width. A sheer shows its gathers more than a heavy curtain does, so a panel ordered barely wider than the window falls as a flat film with no folds. Order for fullness, not just for width.
